In our pursuit of career success, we often overlook the unseen parameters of a fulfilling work life - the people, the stories, the shared memories.
A few days ago I attended the wedding of two former colleagues, whom we shall name Stella and Antonio. Stella and I were close, sharing a department, a team, many project proposals and even more candid conversations. Antonio, from a different department, was more of an enigma - someone I'd always perceived as aloof, even arrogant. We rarely interacted, and I had always assumed the feeling was mutual.
Yet, their wedding invitation was an unexpected honor, a recognition that extended beyond departmental lines.
The ceremony was beautiful, held in the suburbs of a European capital on a warm Friday afternoon. As the officiant shared Stella and Antonio's story - their connection sparked amidst professional challenges, deepened during a pandemic - I was transported back to a chapter of my life I'd thought was closed.
It was a bittersweet journey down memory lane, recalling a time of both professional growth and personal difficulty. The celebration that followed, however, was pure joy. We danced, sang, ate, - oh boy, did we eat! - and shared stories, both old and new.

It was during these unguarded moments that I discovered the Antonio my colleagues knew - a kind, supportive, and genuinely wonderful person. I realized with a pang of regret that I'd missed out on connecting with someone remarkable because I'd been too quick to judge based on professional interactions.
The realization hit me hard on the drive back to the hotel: in our pursuit of career success, we often overlook the unseen parameters of a fulfilling work life - the people, the stories, the shared memories. We focus on skills, salaries, and titles, forgetting that the human connections we forge can be equally, if not more, rewarding. We rarely think of that aspect of growth when we make career plans.
So, the next time you're job hunting, go beyond the salary and perks. Explore the company culture and the potential for meaningful relationships. And when you meet a colleague, resist the urge to stick to superficial pleasantries. You might discover shared interests, inspiring stories, or even a lifelong friend.
Look around with a fresh perspective and see people for all the potential impact they can have on your life, and you on theirs. After all, you may leave a job, you may change a career path, but you'll always carry these people with you.
To Stella and Antonio: my heartfelt wishes for a life full of happiness and prosperity. Thank you for being there even when I didn't know.

5 个月So well written, so much touching. You are 100% right: good colleagues make the difference everywhere, nothing like true friendship and team spirit.

6 个月Very well said Konstantinos Parisopoulos! It is the people that make the company culture, which is so important for progress and fulfillment in the workplace, and it is not to be secondary in focus when selecting a place to work. Couldn't agree more.

6 个月There is simply no escaping that for many of us, a decent proportion of our best memories are those we create with friends we make in the ‘workplace’. Even as consultants, we have engaged with most clients for many years, and these friendships go beyond the work. Thanks for framing the sentiment so beautifully.?
