Beyond Predictive and Generative AI: The Four Emerging AI Areas Set to Make a Bigger Impact on Society and Industry

Here is short article that lays out my prediction on four areas of AI that will create waves of innovation in the coming 2-10 years, just as predictive AI and generative AI have been doing so far.

As we all know, predictive and generative AI have been at the forefront of innovation, but there are 4 emerging areas that are set to make an even bigger impact on society and industry.

The first area is Causal AI, which is being led by experts such as Judea Pearl. AI is currently not very good at understanding cause and effect relationships, but Causal AI aims to change that by focusing on the development of algorithms that can comprehend causal relationships.

The second area is Distributed AI, which is focused on building AI systems with agency and the ability to collaborate and compete with other AI systems. More specifically, an area within DAI is actually referred to as Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (AAMAS) which has been spearheaded by experts such as Victor Lesser and Michael Georgeff to tackle this issue.

The third area is Embodied AI, which argues that without a body, there is no intelligence. Rodney Brooks is one of the experts that have defined this field, and his work centers around the importance of having a body to sense and experience the environment, which is fundamental to intelligence.

Lastly, there is "Goal Creation" AI. Today's AI mostly executes given goals, but it's poor at creating its own goals from scratch. Stuart Russell is among those working to address this issue.

While Predictive AI (Machine Learning) has clearly shown a huge impact on society and industry over the last decade or so, Generative AI is about to do so. None of the four above mentioned areas made it to the prime light yet, and at least two reasons are that 1) we do not have the infrastructure yet to implement the above, and 2) we also still need to uncover fundamental concepts and algorithms to understand and build these types of AI systems.
