??Beyond the power pose

“I don’t sing because I’m happy; I’m happy because I sing.” - William James

??

Last week we looked at how what you do with your body can affect your state of mind.

??The BIG idea: You can use your body in an intentional way to send a message to your brain to be the most powerful version of yourself.

This week we'll look at other ways you can expand both mentally and physically to help you take on your life's biggest challenges.

Recall the power pose...

Dr. Amy Cuddy demonstrates the famous Wonder Woman power pose.

??Another?BIG idea: Along with a power pose, you can use your voice, your thoughts, your words and your imagination to boost your inner power before entering challenging situations.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Recall in as much mental detail as possible a time when you acted in a way you feel you were born to act
  • Imagine yourself in a power pose, as a superhero in your own thought bubble
  • Breathe slowly and deeply
  • Read a list of powerful words?
  • Reframe a scary scenario as a thrilling challenge
  • Rather than taking up a lot of physical space during a conversation with my patented gorilla-on-a-sofa posture, let your words be expansive. Speak slowly, relax your throat so that you can lower your pitch, and don't be afraid to pause.?
  • Sing something gleeful.

?

Do it now: Take a few minutes to think about a time you felt on top of your game. Revel in the memory, and recall it in as much detail as you can. You get bonus points for writing down your peak experience and sharing it with a friend who does the same with you.

Your article just popped up at the perfect time Lynne Everatt! I've just been discussing Strengths Based Interviews with my colleague Clare Endicott where we talked about the power pose and other ways to prepare for a challenging interview. Great tips, thank you.
