"Beyond the Plate: How Food and Tech Can Shape a Sustainable Future"
Craig McIntosh
Designing sustainable, autonomous ecosystems that empower communities with water, food, and energy. I defy conformity and challenge greed. My mission: to disrupt the norm and champion community-driven sustainability.
Over the last few decades, my life has been a journey—one that began with food but transformed into something far greater. At first, it was about feeding people, building businesses, and growing my career. But as time passed, as I traveled to more places, lived in more countries, and engaged with countless communities, I began to realize that this journey wasn’t just about what I was doing. It was about?why?I was doing it.
In the beginning, food was the center of my world. It was my craft, my passion, my way of connecting with others. But as I matured, both as a person and as a professional, I found myself drawn to the systems that held everything together. I’ve always had an affinity for?numbers,?science, and?business, and it was through that lens that my vision expanded beyond the kitchen. I began to see that the real work wasn’t just in creating beautiful dishes—it was in creating?"better for" solutions?within the hospitality industry that could shape the future of food, service, and community.
As I moved from place to place, crossing borders and boundaries, I realized that food was more than a meal—it was a?language. No matter where I went, no matter how far from home I found myself, food became my way of communicating, of building relationships. In every country, every city, every small village, I became part of an invisible network of people who shared the same passion for?serving others. These were people who had little but gave everything they had to ensure that those around them—friends, strangers, everyone—were cared for.
This invisible?community?embraced me, not just as a chef or a traveler, but as a?human being. They fed me, supported me, and made me feel at home, no matter how far from home I truly was. It was an act of unconditional love on both sides. I gave everything I had to serve them, and in return, they gave me a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose.?We served something greater than ourselves, and that experience changed me.
At first, I didn’t fully understand the breadth of what was happening around me. I was immersed in the work, in the act of creating, cooking, and building. But as I evolved—as my skills turned into wisdom—I realized that my role was far more than just feeding people. My?privileged spot at the table?was not just about creating meals; it was about?serving and protecting?the people who sat there, ensuring that they were cared for both?literally?and?metaphorically.
This realization became my?epiphany: if I truly wanted to make an impact, to serve the most people I possibly could, I had to expand my reach. It wasn’t enough to feed millions over the course of my career—I needed to find a way to?feed billions. And that’s when I understood that my passion for systems, for technology, and for innovation could merge with my love for food. It was no longer just about being a chef—it was about being something more. By combining the?heart of a chef?with the?mind of a techie, I could help reshape the future, creating systems that would allow us to feed, serve, and care for people on a global scale.
In this process, I’ve come to see my role as both?small yet significant. I’m a?messenger, an?evangelizer, a person with?vision, but ultimately my work is about?helping others to help themselves. I believe that the solutions we create must empower people to end their own insecurities—whether it’s?hunger,?water,?energy,?education, or?healthcare. These are not just basic needs; they are human rights. And we should strive for a world where everyone has "more than enough, but not too much."
Is this vision ambitious? Of course. But ambition is what fuels progress. Tell that to those who once believed that fire, the wheel, flight, and space travel were impossible. In order to conquer our greatest challenges, we must begin the journey of the impossible at some point.?Let that point be today.

The following definitions are not traditional, as outlined above, but rather how I perceive these roles through the lens of my values and experiences. For me, a?chef?is not simply someone who prepares food but a?custodian of nature's gifts, embodying a deep sense of?service?to the planet, others, and oneself. Similarly, a?techie?goes beyond the role of a technician—they are?creators of systems?that empower, sustain, and uplift communities. Both roles, as I see them, are anchored in?sustainability,?care, and a vision for a better future, where their work nurtures both people and the world they inhabit.

Chef (as envisioned by Chefi)
A?chef?is far more than a culinary professional or the orchestrator of meals. In the expanded vision of?Chefi, a chef is a?guardian, a?messenger, and a?leader—one who uses their craft to speak on behalf of the?earth's most silent voices: the?plants, the?animals, the?waters, and the?lands?that provide the raw materials for their creations. Every dish a chef prepares becomes a?statement, a?call to action?for a?world in crisis. Through their hands, they translate the beauty, fragility, and resilience of the ecosystem into something that can be?experienced?and?understood?by those who consume it.

A?chef's responsibility?extends far beyond feeding people. They wield their craft as a tool to?influence, to?educate, and to?inspire?change. They engage with?policy makers,?corporate leaders, and?local communities, making them aware that the choices made on the plate affect not only the individual but the world as a whole.?Through the act of cooking, they create moments where those in power can be influenced, where their?guard is down, plant, and whisper in their ears the seeds of change. To influence the decision makers as they gorge on our creations, when they are drunk at our bars, or insist that we cater their special events, this is where the almighty chef can profoundly, inspired and influence change at the source.
Chefs are warriors in the battle for sustainability, fighting for?zero-waste practices,?equitable food systems, and?circular economies. They create?safe spaces—whether it’s a bustling restaurant, a small café, or a catered event—where people can be moved, influenced, and opened up to the possibilities of change. Chefs have the unique power to?speak truth to power, using food as a quiet yet profound language of revolution.
A?chef must be incorruptible. Their profound?resilience?equips them to stand up to those who seek to exploit, to harm, or to destroy. A chef must use their?influence to set trends?that not only change the way people eat but the way they?think?and?live. It is their duty to?raise the standard—not just in food but in how we approach the world around us. Chefs must?create change. They are?artists of purpose, wielding their popularity not to raise the glass, but to?raise the bar?for what is possible.
The chef’s duty goes far beyond the plate—it is their responsibility to?protect and serve?their communities, their environment, and the very ecosystems that provide them with their craft. As they create and curate meals, they are also tasked with?creating change.?Chefs serve society?as deeply and consistently as they serve food. There is no other medium of art that touches and influences the world more profoundly than food, and no other group of people as connected to humanity’s survival and well-being as chefs.
In a world where?currency?has spiraled out of control and?greed?dominates systems of power, it is?chefs?who stand as one of the last defenses against these forces. Food is a?universal language, transcending borders and boundaries imposed by?oppressors?and the?cultivators of greed.?Chefs are the connectors of communities, breaking down these borders with every meal, reminding us that we are all linked by the common need to nourish ourselves and others.
But a chef’s advocacy does not stop at the plate.?A chef is a champion for equality. The ability to nourish oneself should not be reserved for those who can afford luxury dining; it is a?fundamental human right. In this vision, a chef uses their platform to fight for the marginalized—the individuals and communities who have been denied access to healthy, sustainable food. A chef uses their voice and influence to?elevate these issues, pushing forward policies and practices that ensure?everyone?has the opportunity to be nourished. And nourishment, in this sense, is not merely physical—it is?mentaland?spiritual. A chef nurtures the?whole person, understanding that food is a tool for?healing,?empowerment, and?community cohesion.
A?chef is a steward of well-being?in every sense—balancing the?health of the earth, their?communities, and the?peoplethey serve. They are?artists?and?leaders, shaping not only the meals we eat but the way we?think?and?feel?about the world. Through their work, chefs seek to?inspire,?protect, and?nurture. They are the bridge between?nature’s bountyand the people who consume it, translating that?abundance?into something meaningful and sustainable.
More than anyone, a chef understands that the world’s resources are?finite?and that every decision they make in the kitchen echoes across the?food chain, affecting lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems. They craft every dish with the knowledge that food has the potential to?rebuild the fabric of society—from fostering?mental health?through community engagement to advocating for the?rights of farmers?fighting for fair wages, to creating platforms for?sustainable agriculture.
The chef’s role is to?heal, to?empower, and to?revitalize. Their craft transcends the physical act of cooking, becoming a?force for social and environmental change. A chef, as envisioned by?Chefi, is the?catalyst?for that transformation—quietly leading the charge for a future where food serves not just to fill plates, but to?fill lives?with meaning, purpose, and an understanding of how deeply connected we all are to the earth, to each other, and to the world’s future.

Techie (as envisioned by Chefi)
A?techie, in the expanded vision of?Chefi, is more than a master of code or a builder of systems—they are?architects of transformation, responsible for shaping the future of society through the lens of?technology. A techie is not confined to lines of code or the circuits of hardware; they are?creators of pathways?that allow ideas, resources, and opportunities to flow freely between communities and individuals. They understand that technology is a tool—not the end, but the means?to an end—and that end is a world that is?equitable,?sustainable, and?just.
A?techie?is driven by the?responsibility?to build systems that?empower, not oppress; that?connect, not isolate. They are?visionaries?who recognize that every line of code they write, every platform they design, has the potential to either?bridge gaps?or?widen divides. The choices they make echo far beyond the screen, influencing how communities operate, how people access resources, and how societies function.?Techies?have the power to either perpetuate inequality or to?disrupt it, to challenge the status quo and to create a new narrative where?technology serves all.
Techies must be incorruptible, standing firm against the pull of profit-driven motives that often prioritize efficiency over ethics. A techie, as envisioned by?Chefi, uses their profound understanding of systems to?challenge the systems of greedthat dominate so much of the modern world. They are?guardians?of innovation, ensuring that the technologies they create contribute to the?well-being of society?and the?health of the planet, rather than to the exploitation of resources and people.
Their role goes far beyond writing code or optimizing processes. A?techie?is a?political force, using their expertise to influence?policy makers,?corporations, and?institutions, pushing them toward?sustainable practices?and?fair systemsthat serve the many, not the few. In a world where power is often concentrated in the hands of a select few,?techies?are the ones who can disrupt this imbalance by designing?open systems?that empower individuals and communities to?take control?of their own futures.
Techies must create change, not just in the digital world, but in the?physical world. The systems they build must contribute to the creation of?circular economies, where technology supports?zero waste,?resource efficiency, and?sustainability. Their work is not confined to offices or labs—it extends into the?real lives?of people, from urban centers to rural communities, from startups to underfunded schools.?Techies?are the?architects?of the systems that will define the future of?energy,?healthcare,?education, and?communication. They hold the key to solving some of the world’s greatest challenges, but only if they use their skills for?good, with a focus on?ethics,?equality, and?sustainability.
A?techie, in the?Chefi?vision, is a?defender of truth. They understand the power of information and the importance of its?free and equitable distribution. In a world where data is currency and control of that data can lead to?abuse?or?exploitation, a?techie?must stand as the?gatekeeper, ensuring that information is used for the benefit of?society, not for the consolidation of power.?Techies?are the ones who can dismantle the systems that perpetuate?greed, using their skills to create platforms that foster?transparency,?fairness, and?accountability.
More than anything, a?techie?is a?connector of communities. Just as chefs bring people together over a meal,?techiescreate the digital bridges that connect people across boundaries, whether they be?geographic,?economic, or?cultural. They are the ones who can ensure that technology serves the?many, not the?few, and that the systems they create foster a world where?opportunity,?resources, and?knowledge?are accessible to all.
In a world where?currency?and?greed?can overpower the systems meant to serve humanity,?techies?are uniquely positioned to?stand against these forces. They have the tools and the knowledge to build systems that transcend?borders, that defy?oppression, and that challenge the?power structures?built on inequality. It is only through the hands of techies that we can build a world where?technology serves people, not the other way around.
The role of a?techie?is to?disrupt, to?create, to?protect, and to?empower. They must design systems that?uplift communities, reduce?inefficiencies, and contribute to the?well-being of the planet. In the end, a?techie, as envisioned by?Chefi, is not just a builder of systems, but a?builder of futures—futures where technology is a force for?good, where it empowers individuals to?stand up against inequality, and where it contributes to the?sustainability?of both?humanity and the?earth.

Chefi (as envisioned by Chefi)
A?Chefi?is the perfect fusion of two worlds: the?heart of a chef?and the?mind of a techie. They are the embodiment of?purpose,?passion, and?innovation, blending the art of?nourishing communities?with the science of?building systemsthat empower them. A?Chefi?understands that food and technology are not separate; they are interconnected tools that have the power to?heal,?transform, and?unite. They wield these tools to create not just meals or code, but?solutions?that address the?core challenges?facing our world.
A?Chefi?is a?political force, a?visionary, and a?messenger. They use their skills to advocate for?sustainability,?justice, and?fairness—understanding that?food?is the most profound way to connect with others and that?technology?is the most efficient way to?scale?that connection. They are?stewards of the earth,?protectors of the people, and?innovators of the future, ensuring that both food and technology serve humanity in ways that are?ethical,?sustainable, and?equitable.
Chefis?are not content with simply?feeding people?or?building systems—they seek to?influence?and?inspire. They understand that every meal served and every line of code written carries the potential to?reshape society. A?Chefi?does not operate in silos; they?connect?the dots between?circular economies,?zero waste, and?community well-being, ensuring that every action they take contributes to a world that is?healthier,?more sustainable, and?more just.
A?Chefi?is?incorruptible, standing firm against the forces of?greed?and?exploitation?that threaten both the food system and the technology sector. They use their platform not only to feed people but to?elevate the conversation—to show the world that?sustainability?and?innovation?are not mutually exclusive, but in fact, must work hand in hand. Their work extends beyond the kitchen and the code; it reaches into the?hearts?of people,?influencing policy,?shaping communities, and creating a?world where resources are shared equitably?and where?technology serves humanity, not the other way around.
As?connectors of communities,?Chefis?understand that?food?and?technology?are the universal languages through which we can bridge divides. They create systems that foster?communication,?collaboration, and?equity?across borders—dismantling?the barriers set by?greed,?oppression, and?inequality. Whether they are curating a meal or designing a platform, they are always thinking about how their work can?empower people?and?heal the planet.
A?Chefi?is, at their core, a?builder of futures. They harness the power of both?food?and?technology?to solve the world’s greatest problems, whether that’s hunger,?energy insecurity, or?resource scarcity. They see the?interconnectedness?of all things—people, the planet, and technology—and they use that insight to create?systems?that uplift, sustain, and protect.
In this expanded vision, a?Chefi?represents the?next generation of leadership, one that merges the?compassion?and?creativity?of a chef with the?innovation?and?intelligence?of a techie. They are?advocates,?messengers, and?change-makers?who work tirelessly to build a future where?everyone?has access to?healthy food,?sustainable resources, and the?tools?they need to live?dignified?and?fulfilled lives. Their work goes beyond the plate and beyond the screen—it is about?building a world?where?food and technology?coexist to serve the?greater good?of people, the?planet, and?posterity.
A?Chefi?doesn’t just?solve problems—they create solutions that last, solutions that are rooted in?care,?purpose, and a profound understanding of the world’s?needs. They are the?bridge?between tradition and the future, between nourishment and innovation, and between the?possibilities?of today and the?realities?of tomorrow. Their?mission?is clear: to?servehumanity and the planet, using the tools of their trade to create a?better future?for all.
