Beyond the Office: Stories of Success

This month, we're celebrating incredible achievements, impactful initiatives, and upcoming events that highlight RTI's commitment to driving positive change worldwide. From individual recognitions to our collective efforts in promoting health equity, our community continues to shine across diverse fields. Here’s a glimpse of what’s going on:

Destiny Talley named to the Black Professionals in International Affairs’ Inaugural Power 50 list

This prestigious recognition celebrates 50 individuals in business, policy, civil society?and the arts who are driving change, fostering innovation, advocating for equity?and inspiring others in the community.??Get the details.

“Being included in BPIA’s Power 50 for doing what I love is a very humbling. I’m so grateful to be considered among powerhouses. It reminds me that everyone is capable of making a bigger impact than they can imagine.”?

We Were Very Proud to Participate in the Inaugural Día de la Ciencia y la Cultura at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

Our dedicated team of scientists and staff came together to create an unforgettable day filled with hands-on scientific activities, vibrant cultural showcases, and inspiring interactions with the future generation of scientists.

We were thrilled to engage with the community, particularly the young Latiné children, as we shared our passion for science through interactive experiences. Events like these are crucial in sparking curiosity and fostering a lifelong love of learning. We are deeply committed to promoting educational opportunities and supporting the dreams of Latiné youth. Witnessing the excitement and enthusiasm in the eyes of these young learners reinforces the importance of our work.

A heartfelt thank you to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences for hosting this wonderful event and to everyone who visited our booth. We’re excited to continue our efforts to inspire, educate, and improve the human condition. Special thanks to our amazing RTI volunteers who made this experience possible!

RTI is participating in the 2024 American Heart Association’s (AHA) Heart Walk on September 8, 2024.

RTI Wellness is Excited to be Part of RTI’s participation in the 2024 American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Walk!

RTI is working with the AHA to create an employer movement to promote health equity in all workplaces across the Triangle — and the nation. Join a team today!

Katrina Kulik, project associate, International Development Group,?and?Emily Moore, research public health analyst, Social, Statistical and Environmental Sciences. What do you think is the most important message the heart walk promotes?

We know that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women, with 45% of women over age 20 living with some form of cardiovascular disease. Being representatives for the Women't Advancement Leadership and Success ERG, we are excited to represent not only our members, but all women who have been impacted by cardiovascular disease. We want to make sure women are aware of the risks and the steps that they can take to promote heart health.

Drew Mercer,?Senior Information Technology Project Management Specialist, Global Technology Solutions. What advice would you give to someone participating in the Heart Walk for the first time?

You can have fun with it by promoting awareness and learning through the many resources that the AHA shares. Your impact is strengthened when you are on a team, and you never know how something as small as a social media post will spark a meaningful conversation with someone who you didn't even know had been impacted by heart disease.

Denise Best, employee services representative, HR. How do you prepare and motivate your team for the heart walk?

Because my team is so committed and dedicated to the cause, I really didn’t have to do much to motivate them.? I offered a vision and strategy, and the rest is history.? When they committed themselves to the cause, they were all in!? That synergy helps us develop a fluent way to collaborate within the team and companywide.

RTI awarded the?George Watts Hill Scholarship?to three exceptional students for 2024

The scholarship program, administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, provides undergraduate scholarships for four years to children of RTI staff members who have achieved the highest order of academic excellence, extracurricular achievement and leadership.???

The FY24 award winners are:?

  • Elena Rose Oh, daughter of Leila Kahwati, Health Practice Area, SSES?

  • Brian Zhang, son of Ying Qin, Analytics Practice Area, SSES?

This annual scholarship conducted through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation was created in honor of George Watts Hill, whose history with RTP and RTI is traced back to our founding as a research institute in 1958.??

Mr. Hill was the second chairman of the Research Institute Committee, which oversaw the creation of RTI. He served as RTI’s chairman until 1992. A businessman who loved our community, Mr. Hill advocated for desegregation, championed the rights of the disabled and was a proponent for better health care for all North Carolinians.

In 1985, the scholarship program was established by RTI for children of RTI employees.?It identifies and honors exceptionally able high school students. In total, 102 students have received 4-year renewable awards for full-time undergraduate coursework at regionally accredited colleges and universities in the United States, with a total value of more than $575,000.?

“I can't wait to put what I have learned into practice,” said Abinet Shiferaw, nutrition manager for the RTI-implemented Feed the Future Ethiopia Transforming Agriculture Activity.?

RTI recently supported Abinet in completing the Health Emergencies in Larger Population course at Johns Hopkins University. The course enhanced her understanding of the comprehensive responses required during security and emergency situations and how to address barriers that intersect with agriculture, health, and food systems. “The health and nutritional status of the larger population impacts the field of agricultural development and highly contributes to the sustainable improvement of nutritional outcome, mortality, and morbidity for millions,” noted Abinet. The skills gained from the course will help her foster better coordination, collaboration, and collective effort in her work.??
