Beyond the Office: Leadership, Strategy & The Future of the Amazon

Spending time with the senior team of Expertia Travel in the Peruvian Amazon was a powerful reminder of how stepping outside the office can provide clarity—not just about our business strategies but also about the greater responsibility we have as leaders in the travel industry.

For over 20 years, I’ve worked in the Amazon, mainly in Ecuador, developing community-based tourism initiatives. Returning to the Tambopata region of Peru was both inspiring and thought-provoking. The richness of its biodiversity is undeniable, yet so are the ongoing threats. Extractivism—whether through illegal mining, deforestation, or unsustainable resource exploitation—remains deeply ingrained in many development agendas. Conservation, strangely, is still perceived by some as an act of activism rather than a necessity for our collective future.

Leadership dreaming in the Amazon Rainforest

Our hope: The more people we bring to these places, the more their importance is understood. When travelers witness the Amazon’s complexity firsthand—its interconnected ecosystems, indigenous communities, and vital role in global climate stability—its protection becomes personal. Lets get this done Tropic Travel and Condor Travel

The Amazon is still at risk. But if we can inspire more people to explore it, understand it, and advocate for it, there’s a real chance that its future can look different from its past.

Glad to he here, glad to share this.
