Angel Investing with Purpose and Precision
Investing in a startup isn’t just about numbers; it's about nurturing dreams and steering visions, and as an angel or HNW investor, you sit at the intersection of those dreams and reality.
As early-stage investors, many of you are business people, ex-founders or have established careers. Unlike professional VCs, you are more likely to be able to (and want to) look inside the mind of a startup founder, appreciate how they think and support them with your own life and business experiences.
The value of this to a founder, alongside cash, is invaluable. Angel/HNW investors can truly be the catalyst that helps launch a successful business.
Invest in People
Invest with conviction, looking at the problem domain, solution and plans. But above all, understand the founding team. If the idea needs to pivot, a good founder can do this. But if the founder is a bad fit, it is harder for them to change.
Founder Friendly
Startup life is a roller-coaster of triumphs and trials. Be the support system, but remember, it's their startup, not yours. Share experiences and gentle advice, not heavy opinions. Be a cheerleader, but let go of any ego. And do not try to micro-manage founders.
Stay Positive
There will be storms, but stay upbeat. Never let your founders doubt your belief in them or their mission.
Be Proactive
Communication is key. Try to get a monthly update, even if it's a quick email or a 20 mins phone call. Never feel like you have got so far behind that you need a big catchup. And if you can proactively offer support or a new contact, don't wait to be asked.
Let Founders Breathe
Try to give founders space, but be there if they need your guidance, without being intrusive. Let them breathe. But sometimes, with so much on their minds, founders will forget you are championing them. So if they've not been in touch for a while, give them a gentle and friendly nudge, and remind them your door is open.

1 年Eventually, more investors will realize that rather than a choice between betting on the jockey or the horse, they should be betting on the house - the house always wins. In other words, it's not the team or the idea that matters most, but the market. Marc Andreessen wrote about this 16 years ago (back during the financial crisis). https://pmarchive.com/guide_to_startups_part4.html, but even he forgets this.
