Beyond Networking: Building Relationships with Integrity

Beyond Networking: Building Relationships with Integrity

The Power of 2 Minutes - Daily Motivation #254 (25th Feb 2024)

We often encounter situations where the line between need and greed can blur. What's essential for one person can easily become an excessive desire for another. This is particularly true in the realm of connections and networking.

A few years ago, a neighbor shared a thought-provoking perspective. While he acknowledged the need for restaurants to stay afloat, he confessed to only eating out once a week, prioritizing the health and hygiene of the food over blind consumerism. This resonated with me, highlighting the delicate balance between individual needs and the sustainability of a system.

In the same vein, I once knew a well-connected ex-CEO who constantly boasted about his vast network in the APAC market. When I transitioned to sales, I naively sought his help for introductions. However, his dismissive attitude, claiming he was "too busy," prompted me to rely on my own networking skills. This experience proved invaluable, teaching me the art and science of building genuine connections on my own terms. Years later, this same ex-CEO, nearing retirement, reversed course, seeking my connections. Offering to connect him with an investor, I discovered his one-sided approach: wanting my help without reciprocation. This solidified my stance on guarding against greed in networking. While seeking help from connections is acceptable, it should be a two-way street, not a one-sided grab for resources.

  1. Mutuality vs. One-sidedness: Genuine connections are built on mutual respect and benefit. Look for individuals who are willing to give and receive support.
  2. Sustainability vs. Exploitation: Seek connections that foster long-term growth and collaboration, not those seeking to exploit your network for personal gain.
  3. Character vs. Opportunism: Pay attention to red flags such as excessive self-promotion, lack of reciprocity, and manipulative behavior. These often indicate greed, not genuine need.

  1. Targeted Assistance: Instead of broad requests, identify specific needs where a connection can offer targeted assistance. This demonstrates respect for their time and expertise.
  2. Reciprocity is Key: When seeking help, offer something in return, even if it's knowledge sharing, introductions, or a heartfelt thank you.
  3. Respecting Boundaries: Always respect your connections' boundaries and avoid overstepping by making repeated or unreasonable requests. This shows consideration and fosters stronger relationships.

  1. Strategic Requests: Asking for 1-2 specific requests can strengthen a connection by demonstrating trust and respect. It allows you to assess their willingness to help and builds a foundation for future collaborations.
  2. Expressing Gratitude: Always express genuine gratitude for any assistance received. This shows appreciation and reinforces the value of the relationship.
  3. Long-Term Growth: Don't become reliant on one or two connections. Use their support as a springboard to actively build your network and explore broader opportunities.

Remember, networking is a journey, not a destination. By distinguishing between need and greed, seeking help strategically, and building strong relationships based on mutual respect and reciprocity, you can leverage your network to achieve sustainable success in your professional pursuits.
