Beyond The Music: Building True Community

The U.S. Surgeon General has declared a loneliness epidemic, stating that social isolation is as hazardous to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Not only does Christian media communicate the message that is the ultimate antidote for loneliness, but we have also spent years of hard work and millions of dollars on marketing to gather an audience around an idea - a set of values – that align closely to what people desire deep in their souls. It is the intersection of these values and that longing upon which the strongest brands are built, more so than tight music playlists and slick contesting.

The Future of Christian Media: Connection, Community & Companionship

People desire to be seen, known, and loved. The future for Christian media companies lies squarely in becoming places of:

  • Connection.
  • Community.
  • Companionship.

If we focus on these three core elements, people will seek us out—regardless of platform disruptions, tech changes, or industry shifts—because we will be where “their people” are.

Understanding the 3 Levels of Friendship

Think for a moment about how we make friends...

  1. Level 1: Shared Experiences with Many - Our kids play little league together, or we both go to the same church.
  2. Level 2: Deeper Bonds with Some- Over time, we discover that we have more things in common with some, often a challenge or life circumstance that you've both dealt with.
  3. Level 3: Lifelong “Ride or Die” Friends with a Select Few - The small handful of people that we feel the closest, and we've walked through the darkest times alongside.

You can't get to the 3rd level with people without going through the 1st 2, and right now, social isolation is preventing even Level 1 friendships from forming. Simple conversations and face-to-face interactions are rare when everyone is glued to their phones.

What This Means

Our on-air talent and the programming initiatives we create should intentionally seek out connections with our listeners at all 3 levels each day.

  • At the first level, we create easy, low-barrier opportunities for connection—through relatable conversations about the sum total of life, and shared cultural moments that invite listeners to engage.
  • At the second level, we open the door for deeper conversations, sharing personal stories, struggles, and triumphs that help listeners realize they are not alone in their experiences.
  • At the third level, we create a sense of true belonging and companionship, where listeners see our station as a trusted voice in their lives—a place they turn to for encouragement, hope, and unwavering support.

Why This Matters

Connection. Community. Companionship. These aren’t just buzzwords; they are fundamental human needs woven into the fabric of every person. As the world feels increasingly isolated and disconnected, Christian radio has an extraordinary opportunity to stand in the gap—creating safe, welcoming spaces where people can experience real relationships, shared faith, and authentic encouragement.

If we do this well, our station won’t just be another media outlet; it will be a vital part of our listeners' daily lives—a source of comfort, joy, and meaningful relationships that keep them coming back, no matter how technology or media trends evolve. This is how we build lasting impact and a thriving future.

…imagine if you were a smoking social isolationist! The Surgeon General may throw up his hands at your personal sobering statistic. We have those thirsty listeners who have unquenchable ears tuned in for real truth about themselves or at least a hope for it. I had just flown home to Montana, hauled out a suitcase and broadcast equipment to keep my show “on the road” while away. The lit tip of a cigarette caught my eye. It was -12 below zero. With equipment now in the garage, I yelled across road, “it’s too cold to be smokin’” and I walked over. It was my childhood best friend’s sister—she was just out of the hospital, talking in a whisper because of the tube they had had in her throat. Kidney stones. She gave me opportunity when she said, “I thought I was going to die. I thought I did die…” (I would have pushed the on-air button and risen the fader to give her encouragement about her experience and then a glimpse of how she could experience eternity and offer her a question of what she was going to choose now that she knew she lived!) I didn’t. I wished her well, pulled my equipment from garage to house. A week later, she did die, heart attack. I want to be an excellent broadcaster—I should reevaluate my time with people too.

Stellar insight. Most men don’t even have a best friend, (even before Covid), and people are lonlier than ever. The demand for Christian radio/commumication is more relevant than ever. Thank you for lighting the way, Matt.
