Beyond IOT

Congratulations to NIMBUS and CIT for running #BeyondIOT today in Cork. High quality speakers and apt topics. Wasn’t expecting to hear so much on ‘Trust’, but considering we live in a world of fake news, it is time technology starts to correct some of the problems that technology (especially social media) has created in the last 10 years. There seemed to be consensus that Blockchain, in some form, has the potential of enabling ‘Digital Trust’. Right now, it seems Blockchain is not achieving it’s potential, but if combined with Quantum computing, this will most likely change quickly and has the potential to become part of our everyday without even knowing about it!

No technology seminar would be complete without a dive into security and #BeyondIOT covered this well today. Knowing each layer of the technology stack and where the weaknesses lie is critical. By introducing and extra layer such as Edge computing, fears associated with IOT and IIOT can quickly be overcome. More loosely coupled IOT solutions will rely on more social and ethical methods, but IOT can be validated through analysing multiple decentralised data sets (back towards Blockchain). IOT should offer suggestions to underlying control loops that are governed and maintained by specific architectures.

Future talks on the day dived deeper into investment options and the convergence of the real and virtual worlds, especially in a manufacturing environment. Kudos to all, it was a very professional and pertinent event and great to have on our doors steps in Cork, Ireland.
