Beyond Illumination: The Role of Artificial Light in Creating Atmospheres

Whether due to improved technologies or the inventiveness of designers, artificial light has undergone a remarkable evolution, moving from being a simple functional necessity to becoming a powerful tool that enables the creation of human experiences in spaces. It is capable of generating captivating atmospheres that involve the senses and evoke deep emotions. The most appropriate strategy not only enriches the dimensions of the environment but makes it possible to explore different sensations within the same space, skillfully exploring the interaction between light and shade, warmth and coldness, as well as depth and height. As well as influencing the well-being and mood of the occupants, lighting plays a role in creating safe and intuitive environments, elevating it to the status of a central design element. Whatever the situation, the symbiosis between architecture and lighting is fundamental, forming two interdependent parts of an integrated experience.

Following on from the last theme on Natural Lighting, in this edition of the Building Future Newsletter, we will focus on the role of artificial lighting in creating pleasant and healthy spaces. The articles chosen range from ways of using lighting as a design strategy, projects that highlight the impact of good practices for rooms, how to calculate the best lighting for each space, and how we will light our interiors in the future.

Does a well thought-out lighting really make a difference for you? Or does any lamp work, as long as you are able to read a book or see where you’re going? Leave us your opinion!

See you in the next edition.

This is so helpful. Personally, a well-thought out lighting makes a whole lot of difference. Lighting goes beyond the number of lamps in your space, rather it’s about the amount of light you allow into your spaces to suite different purposes. Thanks for sharing! ????
