Beyond the Hype and the Hysteria - An Optimistic Future History of AI

Crisis = Danger + Opportunity

  1. Regulations on AI will enforce protections, similar to those for other potentially dangerous technologies like nuclear technology, biotechnology, the arms industry, and space flight, aiming to contain AI from going out of control and causing catastrophic disasters.
  2. Macro-economic and socio-political pressures will drive protectionist measures to address scenarios like loss of human autonomy and job losses.
  3. Policymaking on AI will promote public accountability and governance of system control, ownership, and transparency.
  4. AI ethics guardrails will be put in place aiming to ensure moral judgment, respect for boundaries, and prevention of bias, privacy violations, and misinformation.
  5. Scientific research will help us understand better what's going on in the AI "black box".
  6. Human supervision, feedback and oversight will address AI shortcomings and flaws like "garbage in, garbage out" and hallucinations via new and improved features.
  7. Competitive pressures will result in exponential growth of AI due to corporations and governments investing in the race to develop the latest AI technology.
  8. AI Copilots / Personal Assistants / "Helping Hands" will assist humans in performing tasks, and free people to do other, better, more interesting tasks.
  9. AI will help solve climate change, diseases, etc.
  10. AI will improve our quality of life, promote social progress and drive economic development.

Well said, Khads! Good to see you back in action. Humanity has always found a way to balance disruption with sustainable progress over immense time scales. AI is no different in that sense, though it fundamentally raises the question of 'Who is human?' and 'What is legitimately in the exclusive domain of humanity?'. Couple of years ago I wrote a Linkedin post 'Watsonization of Truth?' and some of the points I raised about the implications find resonance with your points. Talk about synergy across time.
