Beyond the hype: How AI is reshaping the world of work.
Written by Jenny Bicknell Director of Partnership & Policy - TheTalentPeople
The world of work isn’t just changing; it already has.
During a recent roundtable with career leaders, we explored how AI is reshaping careers, education, and workplace expectations. One thing became clear; career paths are not linear. Instead, professionals are navigating dynamic, fast-evolving industries. AI is at the centre of this transformation, impacting marketing, accountancy, and digital roles. Adaptability and continuous learning have become essential for anyone hoping to excel.
A big part of developing in this AI-driven world is knowing how to use the tools. Learning to "talk" to AI, like ChatGPT, is becoming an essential skill. It’s not just about asking questions; it’s about tweaking, refining, and setting parameters to get the best results.. Employers are taking note, with many now valuing AI know-how more than traditional experience. Research from Microsoft even shows that the majority of business leaders prioritise AI skills over experience.
But can we trust AI? It’s a fair question.
AI-generated content can sometimes be unreliable, which is why we need to create spaces where it’s used responsibly. Transparency and ethical practices are key to building trust. It’s not just about what AI can do; it’s about how we use it and ensure it helps, not hinders.
As AI becomes more mainstream, how we learn is changing too. Take risk assessments, for example. Career leaders have been utilising AI tools to increased efficiencies when completing these forms… but the real challenge is teaching people how to use them well. Parents, teachers, and employers all have a role in helping the next generation approach AI with confidence.

And let’s tackle the big question: is using AI cheating?
Initially at the roundtable, some thought so, but opinions are shifting. Research last year from TheTalentPeople, Microsoft, and MovementToWork (among others) found that half of young people felt using AI would make employers less likely to hire them.? Yet employers are increasingly seeing AI as a helpful resource. Of course, balance is crucial. Over-relying on AI can feel inauthentic, and nobody wants to lose that human touch. Employers want people who can use AI wisely—as a tool to enhance, not replace, their own skills
For example, AI is already helping candidates prepare for interviews. Platform such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and the likes, can generate practise questions of help structure responses But authenticity still matters.
The world of work keeps evolving, and AI is leading the charge. To keep up, we need to embrace AI, adapt to its possibilities, and remain authentic in how we approach it. The question isn’t whether AI will transform work—it already has—but how we can leverage it to progress.
AI is already transforming the way we work, learn, and hire—but success lies in how we adapt. Organisations that embrace AI skills, ethical usage, and continuous learning will lead the way in building a future-ready workforce.
