Beyond the Godfather: Taking Charge of Your Career Progression
At some point in our careers, we all come across people we look up to at work – mentors, advisors, or simply someone who has made a positive impact on our career growth. We may even refer to them as our "godfathers" or "godmothers" at work. This person may have helped us get our foot in the door, provided guidance and support, or simply inspired us with their expertise and success. We may look up to them for guidance, mentorship, and even career advancement.
The relationship with a godfather or godmother can be incredibly beneficial, as they can provide invaluable guidance and support, help us navigate the company culture, and advocate for our career growth. However, there can be challenges that arise over time, and it's important to learn how to navigate these relationships in a positive and productive way.
Here are a few tips on how to build a positive relationship with your godfather or godmother:
Another benefit of having a godfather or godmother is that they can help you navigate office politics. Navigating office politics can be a daunting task, especially for those new to the workplace or those who are not familiar with the company culture. Having a godfather or godmother who is well-respected and well-connected in the organization can be a huge asset in this regard. They can provide you with insights on how to navigate various personalities, hierarchies, and work styles, and offer advice on how to handle difficult situations.
But what happens when the relationship with our godfather or godmother at work becomes strained, or when their priorities change and they no longer have our best interests at heart? How do we navigate the situation and continue to advance our careers?
The truth is, no one person can hold the keys to our career success. Relying solely on one person for mentoring or advancement can limit our potential and leave us vulnerable when the relationship changes. While it's important to value and appreciate those who have helped us along the way, we must also take charge of our own career progression.
When we feel like our godfather or godmother is no longer invested in our growth, it's up to us to explore other avenues for advancement. This may mean seeking out new mentors or networking with colleagues in different departments. We should be proactive in seeking out opportunities to develop new skills and gain exposure to different areas of the business.
It's also important to remember that we don't need to stay at the same company as our godfather or godmother to continue growing in our careers. Exploring new industries, companies, and roles can provide new opportunities for advancement and personal growth.
Ultimately, having a godfather or godmother can be advantageous for one's career, but it's not necessary for success. With hard work, determination, and a willingness to learn from a variety of sources, anyone can achieve their career goals and reach new heights. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and explore new opportunities, even if it means moving away from the familiar safety net of a godfather or godmother. In the end, your career success is in your own hands.

1 年Nice one. however, I feel, while having a mentor or sponsor can be helpful for career growth and etc..., it's important for organizations to ensure that these relationships do not lead to biases ( known/unknown) or favoritism and that all employees have access to fair and transparent career advancement opportunities.
