Beyond Gimmicks: The Real Work of Mental Health Awareness
Mental Health Week was last week
Movement was the theme.
Was it just another week for social media teams to post about, or did it make a difference?
Well, I’m in “the space” and I didn’t know about it until Thursday.
So, I wouldn’t say it was marketed too well—I didn’t see many posts about it either.
Probably because the theme was "movement."
May, famously filled with Bank holidays, is not the month people want to think about moving. It's the start of holiday mode for most.
People are thinking about being toes up on a beach or by a pool.
The more time I spend looking at the space and what it has to offer, the more I think, "Yes, that's a great solution."
I think awareness is great, I think it is needed more than ever
But after many conversations with experts and people suffering, it’s clear most of what is out there is just a plaster to cover up the actual problem.
Education around this topic is needed. Rather than gimmicky weeks, we need to teach people how to look themselves in the mirror and have an honest conversation with themselves.
Only then will talking, eating better, and exercising have any lasting effect. Because until you understand why you need to do something, you’ll keep going round in circles, doing stuff people tell you to do.
So, all I ask this week is to simply ask why. Become that 2-year-old self again and just ask why.

9 个月I agree with you Lewis. These 'theme days' and 'theme weeks' sometimes just get lost in the angst of getting a post up in time for fear of having missed it. For what? It's great that you are addressing the problem head on, and developing tools with solid foundations for real transformation.
