Beyond GDP and Introducing the ECO Framework for Africa
ECO Africa: The ECO Platform
Connecting People, Data & Innovation to Drive Sustainable Development Across Environment, Communities & Organizations.
The world is in the midst of a profound transformation in how we measure progress. For decades, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been the dominant metric for assessing a country’s success. But in the halls of the United Nations ' recent General Assembly in New York, a resounding message emerged: GDP alone is not enough. While GDP can reflect economic activity, it fails to capture the full spectrum of human well-being, environmental health, and social resilience. Nowhere is this shortfall more evident than in Africa, a continent rich in cultural diversity, innovation, and natural resources, yet frequently misrepresented by traditional economic measures.
Africa is more than the sum of its GDP. Its true strength lies in its communities, its ecosystems, and its capacity to innovate in the face of challenges. The time has come to move beyond GDP and adopt a new framework that reflects the continent's unique potential—a framework that puts people and the planet at the center of progress.
Enter the ECO Framework, a bold new approach that captures the complexities of development in Africa through three interconnected pillars: Environment, Community, and Organization. Together, these pillars offer a comprehensive way to assess progress, unlocking insights that traditional economic metrics overlook.

The NES will track the overall well-being of people, communities, and institutions, while the SS will focus on the capacity of nations to grow sustainably without depleting their natural resources.
