Gabby Thomas is a track and field superstar and one of the fastest sprinters in the world.
She represented the US in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, winning a personal bronze in the 200m race and a silver for participating in the women’s 4x100m relay.
She won silver in the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
And she’s headed for the Paris 2024 Olympics, claiming her place on Team USA by winning the 200m dash in 21.81 seconds.
But there’s more to Gabby than her track and field medals and accolades.
She’s also an epidemiologist . In May 2023, she graduated with a Master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Texas. Before that, she studied global health and neurobiology at Harvard.
She published research papers on the importance of sleep and the impact of racial disparities in sleep disorders on Black communities.
Gabby is even eyeing a PhD and volunteers at a Houston health clinic for people without health insurance during her off hours.
Clearly, Gabby actively cultivates interests and passions not directly related to athletics.?
What lesson can we entrepreneurs learn here?
It’s simply this: Success can blossom from embracing our multifaceted natures.
There’s value in specialization.
Many small business owners feel some pressure to specialize, especially in the early stages of their entrepreneurial journey, for many reasons.
For one, specialization allows us to focus on our expertise. When we specialize, we develop a deep understanding of our target market, thus creating products and services most suited to their needs. Specialization helps us build our competitive edge.
By focusing on our expertise, we build our authority. We have become known as a go-to expert in that area, allowing us to attract more relevant clients and foster trust within the market.
Lastly, specialization allows us to become more efficient with our resources. We become experts in streamlining operations, maximizing skills within a defined area, and avoiding unnecessary overhead costs.
Pursuing multiple passions creates flexibility.
We must remember that while specialization is crucial, it doesn’t have to be rigid.
Allowing ourselves multiple passions creates the flexibility we need in the ever-changing business landscape and our personal lives.
Having multiple passions allows us to connect the unrelated.
Having diverse interests gives us the ability to draw inspiration and connections from seemingly unrelated fields.

For example, imagine having a day job as a marketing strategist and doing DJ work on weekends. There’s no apparent connection between the two.
That is until you realize both jobs require feeling your audience’s pulse and observing how they react to your messaging (as a marketer) or the music you’re playing (as a DJ).
Having multiple passions makes us adept at solving problems.
Did you know that multi-passionate individuals are often adept at approaching problems from multiple angles?
When exposed to different areas of interest, you learn how to think out of the box and find creative ways to overcome challenges.
It also makes you adaptable. We all know that the business landscape is constantly evolving. You become engaged with new trends and ideas when you embrace your multifaceted interests.
You can infuse these ideas into your business and pivot when opportunities arise. This gives you a way to innovate and future-proof your business, assuring its long-term sustainability.
Having multiple passions makes us balanced and fulfilled.
Perhaps the most important benefit to being multi-passionate is the feeling of greater fulfillment and increased energy.
It’s not uncommon for entrepreneurs to experience burnout, especially when they’re overwhelmed with doing the same thing over and over—without seeing better results.
Engaging in other interests gives your mind some breathing space so that you can see your situation from a different perspective.
This space can also translate into increased focus, motivation, and productivity within your core business.
Being multifaceted sets you up for impactful leadership.
You know the best thing about being a multi-passionate entrepreneur? You put yourself on the launching pad for leadership that profoundly impacts your industry and community.
How so?
For one, your exposure to diverse interests gives you a broader perspective and allows you to understand the needs and concerns of a wider range of people. You approach your leadership challenges more holistically.
This broader perspective makes you capable of creating a more welcoming environment for individuals with various skills and backgrounds. You foster a richer talent pool for your company and inspire others to contribute their unique skills toward your endeavors.
Lastly, your multiple passions pave the way toward building a well-rounded brand. In today’s competitive landscape, a one-dimensional brand can easily get lost.?
When you showcase diverse aspects of yourself – from your expertise to your passions and vulnerabilities – you become more relatable, and your audience sees your brand as authentic.

4 个月Great article Malee V. O.! One of the key ingredients we look for in great salespeople is adaptability and I've seen a direct correlation between that trait and the variety of passions and interests someone has. Glad you called that out. One trick ponies are less adaptable...and kinda boring too!
