Beyond "Fine": 4 Steps to Authentic Communication and Support

Beyond "Fine": 4 Steps to Authentic Communication and Support

A sudden health crisis can turn your world upside down, causing you to feel overwhelmed and vulnerable.?

As women entrepreneurs, we're so used to helping others that it often feels unnatural - and even impossible - to put ourselves first. When the tables turn, and we need support and healing, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

I recently had the privilege of speaking with Deb Krier, a remarkable woman who transformed her personal struggle with cancer into a powerful platform of hope and empowerment. The story she shared on my podcast is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the unexpected ways we can find purpose in our pain.

From Cancer Society Employee to Cancer Warrior

Imagine working for the American Cancer Society, only to later be diagnosed with the disease yourself. That's exactly what happened to Deb. In 2015, she received a life-altering diagnosis: stage four triple-positive metastatic breast cancer.

Instead of letting this diagnosis define her, Deb chose to redefine her purpose. She founded "Trying Not to Die.LIVE," a platform that provides support, resources, and community to those dealing with cancer.

The L.I.V.E. Method: A Blueprint for Empowerment

At the heart of Deb's mission is the L.I.V.E. method, an acronym that encapsulates her approach to facing life's challenges:

  • L - Lead your tribe: From family to physicians, you must lead your coalition.
  • I - Invigorate your soul: Put yourself first, because it's your life on the line.
  • V - Voice your feelings: Build a bridge of honesty, for only the truth is actionable.
  • E - Elevate your mindset: Believe that you will be fine, no matter the outcome.

This powerful framework isn't just for those facing health challenges. As spiritually-minded women entrepreneurs, we can apply these principles to every aspect of our lives and businesses.

Embracing Your Inner Warrior

Deb's organization chose the warrior as their emblem, inspired by a powerful quote: "Fate whispers to the warrior, 'You cannot withstand the storm.' The warrior responds, 'I am the storm.'"

This warrior spirit is essential for us as women business owners. We must lead ourselves first, decide what we want, and then find others who can support us on our journey.

The Power of Authentic Communication

One of the most crucial lessons from Deb's experience is the importance of honest communication. How often do we respond with "I'm fine" when we're anything but?

As Deb puts it, "Fine is a four-letter word." It covers everything from "I'm about to keel over" to "I'm going to run a marathon." By not being honest about our needs and feelings, we deny others the opportunity to support us.

Breaking the "Fine" Barrier

If you struggle with asking for help, try this exercise:

  • Choose a day to practice asking for things.
  • Enlist the support of a family member or close friend.
  • Start small - ask for a glass of water or help with a simple task.
  • Gradually build up to asking for more significant forms of support.

Remember, asking for help doesn't make you less capable. It makes you human.

Building Your Tribe

As female entrepreneurs, we understand the power of community. Deb's approach to growing her organization emphasizes quality over quantity. She values the intimacy of a smaller group where she can truly connect with and support each member.

Consider how you can create or join a supportive community in your own life and business. Who are the people who lift you up, challenge you to grow, and offer support when you need it most?

Embracing Curiosity and Change

When I asked Deb what she's curious about, her answer resonated deeply: "What will the next three months bring?" In these uncertain times, it's natural to wonder about the future. But as Deb reminds us, no matter what challenges arise, "We will be fine."

We can embrace this curiosity about the future too. Imagine what opportunities for growth and service might be just around the corner.

Your Call to Action

Inspired by Deb's journey, I invite you to reflect on these questions:

  • How can you apply the L.I.V.E. method to your business and personal life?
  • What steps can you take to communicate more authentically with your support network?
  • Who are the members of your "tribe," and how can you strengthen those connections?

Remember, you are the warrior of your own story. Embrace your strength, voice your truth, and never hesitate to reach out for support when you need it. Together, we can face any storm that comes our way.

Instead of, "I'm fine." One could ask, "Do you have time for the multifaceted truth?"

What a powerful message, Gloria! “I’m fine” line is one so many of us know too well. As women in general, there’s often this unspoken expectation to be everything for everyone, holding it all together while hiding our own struggles. It’s unfortunate that so many suffer in silence and somehow all of those repressed emotions manifest in a disease. I love the focus on building authentic support and the idea that “fine” could be the very thing holding us back from truly thriving. Learning to ask for help is a game-changer. Thanks for opening this conversation.
