As the semester concludes, I couldn't help but contemplate the current cohort of students seeking Work Related Learning Attachment and the perspectives they hold, reflecting on my own similar circumstances. The transition from academia to the corporate world is often filled with anticipation and uncertainty for aspiring professionals, especially for those who have minimal or no formal work experience. As they embark on their internship journeys, their expectations are often shaped by anecdotes and stories shared by their peers who have already undergone similar experiences. These narratives, ranging from tales of success and fulfilment to accounts of disappointment and exploitation, play a significant role in shaping the interns' perception of what awaits them in the corporate realm. They also play a crucial role in influencing interns' energy and confidence during the recruitment process, as anxiety and feeling overwhelmed can sometimes prevail. Having sought insights from others about their expectations versus realities of the same experience, I felt compelled to share my own, with the hope that they might inspire and motivate others, along with a selection of life lessons I gained during my internship.?
In work Responsibilities
Expectation: I anticipated being assigned only simple tasks that were within my limited capabilities, such as basic data entry and running frequent coffee errands. I believed my contributions were going to be minimal and insignificant.
Reality: However, the reality turned out to be quite different. I was given the opportunity to work on more complex tasks that had a tangible impact on the organisation. I was involved in critical business operations where my input was valued and recognised. In instances where I delivered exceptional work, I even received commendations for my efforts.?
In Workplace Relationships
Expectation: I anticipated being isolated from other work colleagues due to my junior status and the assumption that everyone already had established workmate companions. I believed that social connections in the workplace would be limited due to the need for a strictly "professional" environment.
Reality: However, I quickly discovered that my perception of professionalism was not entirely accurate. I realised that it was indeed possible to maintain professional conduct while also fostering positive relationships with my peers. I learned that in order to be an active participant in work relationships, I needed to demonstrate responsibility, integrity, and accountability. I found myself interacting with senior figures in the company, including the Managing Director and Senior Directors. What stood out was their genuine interest in getting to know me not only in the context of my work but as an individual. These interactions taught me that building professional relationships goes beyond the immediate team and involves connecting with leaders who value the contributions of every team member.

Grasping of concepts and Career Paths
Expectation: I, like many others, held the misconception that coding and software development was beyond my abilities and an unattainable career path. Despite my passion for learning, I always avoided pursuing coding due to this belief.
Reality: The reality is that coding is indeed challenging and requires substantial personal effort to master its concepts. It takes years of experience to become proficient in coding. However, during my internship, I had a transformative experience. With the guidance and coaching from my supervisor, I was exposed to the world of coding and software development. This exposure led me to choose software development as a career path. I also realised that although coding is challenging, I needed to invest significant effort and be patient with myself while learning programming concepts.
But definitely, it's not going to be the same experience for everyone. As I mentioned, I've spoken to a few peers, and some expressed a sense of discontentment. Work Related Learning period offers different individuals a unique opportunity to experience the realities of the world, and while some may find that their sinister expectations were met and surpassed, others may have different outcomes - each workplace has its distinct culture and understanding and grasping the dynamics of your environment is crucial. Regardless of the specific experience, the essence of Work Related Learning lies in gaining a firsthand understanding of how the world operates.
Rather, our common ground lies in the capacity to implement a few lessons I gained on my journey.?
To truly benefit from this opportunity, it is important to approach it with a willingness to learn and a readiness to go the extra mile. Having a notebook and pen, especially in the initial days, proves beneficial for jotting down important information and procedures, given the volume of information presented.?
Be humble and respectful, do not be afraid to ask for help or clarification. Moreover, embrace the feedback process with openness, as constructive feedback is an invaluable tool for personal and professional growth.
By embracing these qualities, individuals can navigate the challenges, make the most of the resources available, and gain practical insights into the workings of the world.
