Beyond the Desk: A Heartfelt Chat With Rebecca Shiels
Phoenix - Your Professional Search Partner
Leaders in Tech/Fintech, Professional Services, and Financial Services search.
Meet the Recruitment Consultant who loves her job (and her naps!).?We recently sat down with Rebecca Shiels to chat about her career journey at Phoenix. In this interview, she shares her thoughts on what makes Phoenix unique, as well as the most rewarding aspects of her role.
What is your current title, and your role responsibilities?
I am a Recruitment Consultant on the Accounting and Finance team. I work with any Qualified Accountants - from Newly Qualified, up to Financial Controller level, working with them on exciting career moves, or just chatting generally about the market and providing insights on salaries, work models, and different career paths.
What led you to join Phoenix?
I guess, this being the first “Big Girl Job” it was important for me in the interview stages to find a company that was going to put time and effort into onboarding and introducing me to the new exciting world of recruitment! From meeting Jean Ward in my first interview it was super clear that Learning and Development (or L&D) was a big part of the company - and still is a year on!
From then, working under an industry professional, any questions about the Accounting and Finance side of things were easily answered!
What excites you most about your role?
The people! Not only the guys in the office who make it easier to come in on a Monday morning! But also the amazing candidates and clients we get to speak with day-in-day-out. The recruitment world is changing so much, you genuinely never know who you’ll be working with next!
What aspects of your role do you find most rewarding and challenging?
Seeing candidates get excited about a role, or finding them their “dream job” will always be the most rewarding feeling, it makes your day, week, or month even when someone’s happiness stems from a role you introduced them to!
Although, I guess that can also be one of the challenges - when you have to let someone know that the job they were so excited about isn’t theirs.?
Can you share a fun or unique fact about yourself that most people might not know?
I could fall asleep ANYWHERE

How do you find the culture and life in Phoenix?
It’s safe to say I’ve made friends here that go outside office friends in Phoenix, everyone from the moment I started has been friendly and welcoming. There’s always something to look forward to - whether it's a quarter-end outing or just Friday evening pints!
What do you think makes Phoenix unique? What sets us apart from other search firms?
Phoenix are growing fast but each team does one thing, and they do it well. It’s a firm led by, and filled with industry experts who share everything they know with their teams. What message would you give to potential clients who are considering partnering with Phoenix?
Phoenix was created with the idea to change the recruitment world for the better - even if you have no live roles at the moment, building a relationship costs nothing!
What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
The most cliché one - What’s for you won’t pass you.?
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice at the start of your career, what would it be?
I think because I’m still at the start of my career, I need to keep reminding myself that everything gets easier the more time you spend at it - don’t be discouraged if things don’t work out perfectly the first, second, or one-hundredth time! It’s all learning.
