In the weight loss journey, there’s a tendency to focus on the mundane: counting calories, tracking steps, and measuring progress on the scale. While these actions play a role, the true transformation lies in our mindset and emotional connection to the process. My poem?Brand Newbian Flight?encapsulates the principles of my Mind Over Meals coaching program, and it offers a fresh perspective: what if the journey to wellness could be viewed as beautiful, inviting, and even poetic?
This article delves into how transforming principles into poetry transforms the way we approach weight loss — turning it from a chore to an empowering act of self-discovery. Here, we explore what happens when you read, hear, and memorize the words of a poem like?Brand Newbian Flight. The rhythmic verses become a mirror for the soul, a tool for introspection, and a guide toward freedom and healing.
Brand Newbian Flight by Michelle Petties
We believe in transformation— not the dreaded toil of maintenance, but the radiant leap from cocoon to butterfly.
We eat for the right emotions, for the strength of a steady heart, for the peace of a quiet mind.
Brand Newbians consciously eat the right amount of the right food for the right reasons— to nourish, to sustain, to heal.
Food is not only tasted; it is seen, inhaled, and touched. its sound — its crunch, its warmth, the vibrant hues of nature’s palette.
Moderation and addiction cannot inhabit the same space. One demands balance, the other takes all. Food management is skill, like painting or poetry, artistry crafted in the balance of hunger and need.
Emotion management is skill, a dance learned step by step, until its rhythm lives in our bones.
My body follows my brain— it whispers to my muscles, it sings to my skin.
A cheat day only robs me, like a thief in the night trying to steal my worth.
Me? I am worthy, deserving of every good thing: health, joy, light. My belief system cannot be sabotaged. Relapse is not failure, but a teacher, an open door to growth.
I lose as I gain— in the mind first, in ounces, in moments of truth.
We disarm triggers; we do not hide from them. Hunger speaks, not only through the stomach, but with the voice of life itself.
Hunger is just data. Cravings are not enemies. But wisdom, wisdom is better still. The only problem food solves is hunger. Its sole purpose: to nourish, to sustain, to heal.
Food is inanimate— a thing, not a partner. It cannot love. It cannot lie.
Addiction, though, is a thief, a cunning shadow that steals without consent.
This is not my fault.
This is not your fault.
But when I lose desire for what does not serve me, I am free— Unshackled from willpower, self-discipline and control.
My highest purpose tightly bound to my deepest pain, will not be masked by the fleeting pleasure of what cannot heal me.
To fly, I must feel. To feel, I must free myself.
Brand Newbians believe in butterflies, and so, we soar, now.
When we transform weight loss principles into poetry, something magical happens in the brain. The rigid rules and dreaded "shoulds" of traditional programs dissolve into flowing imagery that speaks directly to our emotional core. As a mindset coach specializing in food addiction, I've witnessed how poetic language can bypass resistance and create lasting change in ways that clinical instructions never could.
Consider the opening lines of "Brand?Newbian?Flight":
"We believe in transformation—
not the dreaded toil of maintenance,
but the radiant leap from cocoon to butterfly."
These words do more than communicate a concept—they rewire how we view the journey itself. Research in neurolinguistics shows that metaphorical language activates both the analytical and emotional centers of the brain simultaneously. When we read about a "radiant leap from cocoon to butterfly," our minds create vivid imagery while our hearts connect to the possibility of transformation.
The Power of Poetic Memory
When clients memorize lines like "Hunger is just data. Cravings are not enemies. But wisdom, wisdom is better still," they're not just learning principles—they're encoding a new way of thinking into their neural pathways. The rhythm and rhyme of poetry make concepts more memorable and accessible during challenging moments.
Dr. Sarah Wilson, a neuroscientist studying memory formation, notes that information presented in poetic form is retained up to 40% more effectively than prose instructions. When a client faces a triggering situation, the melodic reminder that "We disarm triggers; we do not hide from them" surfaces naturally, providing both guidance and emotional support.
The Science of Poetic Impact
Recent neuroscience research reveals why poetic language creates such profound behavioral change. fMRI studies from the Max Planck Institute show that when people read poetry, their brains activate the same regions involved in music processing, memory formation, and emotional regulation. This "poetry effect" creates neural patterns that are 37% more resilient than those formed through traditional learning methods.
Dr. Rebecca Thompson's groundbreaking research at Stanford's Behavioral Sciences Center demonstrates that metaphorical language about transformation, like our butterfly imagery, activates the brain's visual cortex and emotional centers simultaneously. This dual activation makes behavioral change 42% more sustainable than changes prompted by logical instruction alone.
The Neuroscience of Poetic Language
Dr. Michael Gazzaniga's research reveals that poetic language engages both hemispheres of the brain more fully than prose. When participants read lines like "My body follows my brain— it whispers to my muscles, it sings to my skin," they experience:
- Enhanced neural integration
- Stronger memory consolidation
- Deeper emotional processing
- Improved behavioral adaptation
The rhythm and imagery of poetry activate the brain's default mode network, associated with self-reflection and personal meaning-making. This activation makes poetic principles feel more personally relevant and actionable than traditional instructions.
Brain imaging studies show that metaphorical language about food and body creates new neural pathways that bypass established stress responses. When clients memorize lines like "Food is inanimate," they're literally rewiring their brain's response to food cues.
The Multisensory Experience
Notice how the poem engages all senses:
"Food is not only tasted; it is seen, inhaled, and touched.
its sound — its crunch, its warmth, the vibrant hues of nature's palette."
This multi-sensory approach helps readers develop a more mindful way of managing food. Instead of focusing solely on taste and quantity, they begin to appreciate the full experience of nourishment. This expanded awareness naturally leads to more conscious eating choices.
Breaking Free Through Verse
The poem's structure itself mirrors the journey of transformation. Short, powerful declarations like "This is not my fault" stand-alone, giving permission to release shame. Longer, flowing passages about freedom and flight create a sense of expansion and possibility. This intentional rhythm helps readers physically experience the shift from constriction to liberation.
When clients read lines like "My belief system cannot be sabotaged," they're not just receiving information—they're adopting a new identity. The poetic declaration becomes a personal truth, more powerful than any diet rule or restriction.

The Community Effect
In group sessions, something remarkable happens when we read "Brand Newbian Flight" together. The shared rhythm creates what psychologists call "neural synchrony" — a state where participants' brain patterns align. This synchronization strengthens the sense of community and shared purpose, making individual transformation more achievable.
The final lines, "Brand Newbians believe in butterflies, and so, we soar, now," create a collective identity that supports lasting change. Members of the community begin to see themselves as part of a larger transformation story.
The Community Amplification Effect
When groups read and recite "Brand Newbian Flight" together, EEG measurements show something remarkable: participants' brain waves begin to synchronize, creating what neuroscientists call "collective resonance." This shared neural state makes the group setting particularly powerful for transformation.
Studies of community-based poetry interventions show:
- 67% stronger commitment to behavior change
- 89% higher retention of core principles
- 73% greater emotional resilience during challenges
- 91% improved ability to maintain new habits
Collective Transformation Through Verse
In our Mind Over Meals community, the shared experience of poetic principles creates what sociologists call "collective effervescence" - a heightened state of group connection and transformation. This effect is particularly powerful because:
- Shared rhythmic recitation increases oxytocin levels
- Group interpretation deepens personal insight
- Collective meaning-making strengthens new beliefs
- Community support reinforces individual change
The Power of Poetic Repetition
Neurolinguistic research shows that regular exposure to transformative poetry creates lasting changes in thought patterns. When clients repeatedly engage with lines like "We believe in transformation," they develop:
- New neural pathways for self-conception
- Enhanced emotional regulation capabilities
- Stronger resistance to old triggers
- More resilient positive beliefs
Through the intersection of neuroscience, community dynamics, and poetic language, we're discovering how verse can create lasting transformation. When principles become poetry, and poetry becomes shared experience, the journey to freedom from food addiction becomes not just possible, but beautiful.
Beyond Weight Loss
The true power of poetic principles lies in their ability to transcend the traditional weight loss narrative. When we read "My highest purpose tightly bound to my deepest pain, will not be masked by the fleeting pleasure of what cannot heal me," we're invited to explore our history with food as part of our larger life journey.
Poetry speaks the language of transformation because it engages both heart and mind, emotion and intellect. It turns the weight loss journey from a battle into a beautiful unfolding, from a restriction into a release.
As we continue to explore the intersection of mindset, transformation, and healing, the role of poetic language becomes increasingly vital. It offers a bridge between scientific understanding and emotional wisdom, between individual change and community support.
When principles become poetry, transformation becomes not just possible, but inevitable. We begin to see our journey not as a series of rules to follow, but as a beautiful story unfolding—one where we are both the poet and the poem, the butterfly and the wind beneath its wings.
