Beyond the Courtroom: Careers in Law You May Not Have Considered

By Sophie Odgers-Roe ?????? , Careers Consultant, University of London Careers Service

The global labour market within the Legal sector is saturated and highly competitive. For example, in the UK, compared to the national average, there is 3.6 % less growth in opportunities for budding legal professionals.

However, fear not! Because this article will explore other engaging and high-paid roles inside and outside of Law that you can have as a plan B, plan C, or even plan D!

?? Legal Tech

With the fast development of Artificial Intelligence globally, there is a demand for in-house legal technology specialists, usually from a law and/or a computer science background, who are able to support solicitors by helping law firms use technology to work more efficiently. This could be to:

  • Build a platform that assists clients in managing their legal / commercial matters.
  • Support in using blockchain to streamline the use of contracts.
  • Aid lawyers in capturing, organising, and searching large volumes of data.

Abhivardhan, Managing Partner & Founder of Indic Pacific Legal Research LLP and Founder & Head of Research at VLiGTA?, discusses the main concerns about AI globally and the use of AI judges in certain global regions in our podcast's newest season:

?? Legal Executive

Compared to a solicitor, a Legal Executive tends to concentrate specifically on a certain area of law (for example, wills and testimonies). Legal Executives usually work alongside solicitors, and give legal advice, draft legal documents, and interact with clients and barristers.

As All About Law states, there are only three major differences between a Legal Executive and a Solicitor:

  • The route to qualification as a Legal Executive is considerably less competitive and less expensive.
  • The right of a Legal Executive to perform reserved legal activities (such as litigation and conveyancing) is restricted.
  • Salaries are typically (but not always) lower for Legal Executives than for Solicitors.

Though the Legal Executive role is mainly found within the UK, there are other careers within law around the globe that could be a potential alternative for Law graduates. For example, in India, it is common that businesses recruit “Law Officers” (you can find vacancies on Lawctopus), which are usually graduates who hold a LLB. These officers play a crucial role in safeguarding the company; ensuring compliance and contributing to the overall strategy of the organisation.

?? Arbitration

Across borders, litigation between companies and individuals is expensive and time consuming. Arbitration enables two parties who are in dispute to instruct a neutral party, an "Arbitrator", to civilly discuss and come to an agreement or compromise. The decisions that are made are not necessarily legally binding, and businesses and individuals may find that they later go through a legal process. While a law degree is not essential to become an Arbitrator, it is usually recommended. There are also regulatory boards linked to Arbitration, such as the Association for International Arbitration, based in Brussels.

Nathan O'Reilly (Risk & Compliance Manager at Three Crowns LLP ), one of the speakers of our "Sector Insights: Law" panel event, discussed this space in more detail. Watch its recording through this link.

??Auditing & Regulation

Global corporate firms such as 德勤 recruit Law students on their Regulatory Assurance projects. Over time, auditing has become important within the private as well as the public sectors, with regulators, stakeholders and clients demanding that compliance is to a high standard in areas such as Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG).
