Principles Vs Rules?
In this months newsletter, we look at how following rules, or embracing principles, may have an effect on how you may manage Safety, Health, Environment and Quality within your Business.
Here is one side of the discussion - why we should follow Principles over Rules.
Feel free to comment if you agree with this side of the discussion, or provide your input as to why Rules may in deed need to take president.
Embracing Principles over Rules in SHEQ Consultancy?
- A Blueprint for Success?
In the dynamic landscape of Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) consultancy, the distinction between merely following rules and embracing principles can be the key to unlocking unparalleled success for any organisation.
?? Adaptability and Responsiveness:
Principles provide a framework that encourages adaptability. In the ever-evolving SHEQ landscape, rigid adherence to rules might not capture emerging risks or changing regulatory landscapes. Principles empower a SHEQ consultant to navigate uncertainties with agility, ensuring that strategies align with the organisation's current needs.
?? Driving a Proactive Culture:
Rules often focus on compliance, but principles delve deeper into fostering a proactive culture. By instilling a sense of ownership and responsibility, a consultant guided by principles promotes a workforce that actively engages in maintaining Safety Standards, thereby reducing incidents and improving overall performance.
?? Continuous Improvement:
Principles promote a mindset of continuous improvement. Working with guiding principles strives not only to meet the current standards but consistently seeks ways to enhance Safety, minimise Environmental Impact, and optimise Quality. This commitment to improvement ensures long-term sustainability and resilience.
?? Tailored Solutions for Unique Challenges:
Every organisation is unique, with its own set of challenges and goals. Principles allow the crafting of bespoke solutions that align with the specific needs of a company. This tailored approach ensures that the SHEQ strategy seamlessly integrates into the company's operations, maximising effectiveness.
?? Why Employ a SHEQ Consultant?
In a world where compliance is just the starting point, consultancy becomes a strategic partner for businesses aiming not only to meet standards but to surpass them. By applying guiding principles, value is aded by fostering a culture of Safety, driving Continuous Improvement, and tailoring solutions for optimum results.
In essence, it's not about merely following rules; it's about embracing principles that propel an organisation toward excellence. Employing a SHEQ consultant well-versed in this philosophy becomes an investment in sustained success and a testament to a company's commitment to a safer, healthier, and more sustainable future.
Supporting statement from a pioneer with regards to Rules vs Principles when it comes to Productivity:
[Reportedly] Elon Musk sent an email to the staff at Tesla, and gave 6 points of advice to improve productivity. One of which, is Principles over Rules... You can find all 6 just below.
Do you agree? How could this affect quality?
You can be the Judge:
1) Avoid large meetings
Large meetings waste valuable time and energy.
- They discourage debate
- People are more guarded than open
- There’s not enough time for everyone to contribute
Don’t schedule large meetings unless you’re certain they provide value to everyone.
2) Leave a meeting if you’re not contributing
If a meeting doesn’t require your:
- Input
- Value
- Decisions
Your presence is useless.
领英推è
It’s not rude to leave a meeting.
But it’s rude to waste people’s time.
3) Forget the chain of command
Communicate with colleagues directly.
Not through supervisors or managers.
Fast communicators make fast decisions.
Fast decisions = competitive advantage.
4) Be clear, not clever
Avoid nonsense words and technical jargon.
It slows down communication.
Choose words that are:
- Concise
- To the point
- Easy to understand
Don’t sound smart. Be efficient.
5) Ditch frequent meetings
There’s no better way to waste everyone’s time.
Use meetings to:
- Collaborate
- Attack issues head-on
- Solve urgent problems
But once you resolve the issue, frequent meetings are no longer necessary.
You can resolve most issues without a meeting.
Instead of meetings:
- Send a text
- Send an email
- Communicate on a discord or slack channel
Don’t interrupt your team’s workflow if it’s unnecessary.
6) Use common sense
If a company rule doesn’t:
- Make sense
- Contribute to progress
- Apply to your specific situation
Avoid following the rule with your eyes closed.
Don’t follow rules. Follow principles.

1 å¹´Thanks Andrew Smith MBA! I am interested to see what peoples opinions are.... Which do you believe are more important, Roles or Principles? I have shown one side of the discussion, in support of principles, do you have anything to the contrary or to support why Rules should be priority?
