Beyond the Classroom. Preparing Students for Real-World Creative Challenges
Christian Vernaschi
Creative Strategy Director, Facilitator, AI Enthusiast, Lecturer | Empowering brands to lead the future with story, creativity, and technology.
In the realm of creative industries, the convergence of academic learning and real-world application presents unique challenges and opportunities. Throughout my career as a lecturer and consultant, I have had the privilege of guiding talented students through various projects that required them to apply their academic knowledge in real-world contexts to develop practical solutions. This mentorship and consulting journey has honed my approach to leadership in both educational and business contexts.
I am Chris, and I am excited to share how preparing students for real-world creative challenges has shaped my teaching philosophy and professional practice.
In the context of my teaching, "real-world creative challenges" are defined as tasks that not only represent the current realities faced by companies but also involve real clients with genuine problems to solve. This approach allows us to dive deep into the client's issues, understand various organizational structures, and adapt to different team dynamics and industry-specific situations.
Educational Approach
To bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, I employ a hands-on, client-focused methodology. In courses like "Brand Strategy," clients are involved from the outset, providing briefs that outline their perceived challenges or goals. Midway through the process, students interact with these clients to validate their initial ideas, mirroring the iterative nature of the design process. This feedback loop helps students refine their concepts and develop solutions that can be prototyped and tested using methods such as interviews and focus groups. By the end of the course, students present a viable project to the client, replicating real-world scenarios and industry practices.
Key Skills and Competencies
The essential skills and competencies I focus on include analytical thinking, creative thinking, commercial excellence, understanding human behavior, emotional storytelling, and validation processes. Through various exercises and tools, students engage in analytical desk research to contextualize the challenge. Workshops are conducted to identify the real problem, often unknown even to the client. Using design thinking methods, students develop and validate their solutions through stakeholder feedback, culminating in the creation of prototypes. This process equips students with the ability to create feasible solutions and apply these skills to future challenges across different industries.
Projects and Collaborations
The latest clients my students collaborated with include Boat Local and Devohome. Additionally, students have worked with Cocora and Napp. These projects were selected based on the clients' openness to a collaborative approach, dedication, and availability to offer valuable feedback. While I predominantly focus on scale-ups due to their established yet still adaptable brand presence, I also recruit start-ups to provide students with a diverse range of challenges and opportunities. This combination ensures that students experience a variety of business dynamics and innovation possibilities, preparing them for real-world scenarios across different stages of business development.

Mentorship and Guidance
Mentoring students involves addressing the diverse needs within the classroom, from self-motivated individuals to those requiring additional stimulation. A common challenge is maintaining trust in the process, as some students may attempt to skip steps. I emphasize the importance of focusing on the process rather than just the grade. To support them, I provide relevant content, spend extra time explaining concepts, and weekly feedback. This holistic approach ensures that students not only complete their projects but also internalize the learning process.
Pivotal Learning Moments
This year, I received some of the best compliments from students. One group initially struggled with branding concepts and team dynamics but, through continuous feedback and curiosity, delivered an exceptional strategy based on market data. They learned not only about brand strategy but also problem-solving and team collaboration. One student remarked, "We were initially let down by our team, but we found the strength to overcome these challenges and were happy to have learned so much about what's behind brand strategy and how to solve problems. We became fully engaged with the topic and the problem."
Another group expressed that my course was the most enjoyable and informative of the year, highlighting the engaging and educational experience. They said, "This was the best course of this year; we learned so much, and it was extremely fun." These testimonials underscore the transformative impact of the course, where students not only gain knowledge but also develop a passion for the subject matter.
Personal Reflections
Preparing students for real-world challenges has significantly influenced my professional growth and teaching style. Working with students daily has taught me to empathize and has been incredibly fulfilling. While it's challenging to motivate disengaged students, focusing on those who are committed and curious brings immense satisfaction. Sharing my own invaluable experiences enhances their learning and keeps me energized.
To continue evolving my teaching approach, I constantly explore new tools, methods, templates, and technologies. Staying attuned to real-world developments, working directly with clients, and learning from industry leaders both online and offline allow me to adapt and enhance my courses continuously. This ongoing evolution ensures that my students are well-prepared for the dynamic challenges they will face in their professional careers.
By integrating real-world challenges into the classroom, we provide students with a comprehensive learning experience that prepares them for the complexities of the professional world. Through client collaborations, hands-on projects, and a focus on essential skills, students gain the confidence and competence to excel in their careers. As educators, our role is to guide, mentor, and continuously evolve our teaching methods to meet the demands of an ever-changing industry landscape.
