Beyond Chatbots: Understanding the Rise of AI Agents

Do you remember the feeling of dread that hung in the air two years ago when GenAI was making daily headlines? I certainly do. When GenAI first burst into scene towards the end of 2022 and early 2023, everyone was talking about ChatGPT and every other tool with a wacky name! ?? How would it do everything and anything from writing essays and debugging code to creating images, videos and even replacing school or college professors. If 2022 was the birth of AI Chatbots as we know it, then by all indications 2025 will see a lot of AI Agents coming out into the open.

What are AI Agents?

In the last two years, the world has seen a lot of advancements in Generative AI space, right from Text to Text, Text to Images or Text to Videos based Generative AI capabilities. And all of that’s been nothing short of steppingstone for the next big AI breakthrough- AI Agents! Simply put, an AI is slightly more advanced AI program that can perform certain autonomous tasks that aren’t just limited to its base program.

ChatGPT or Gemini can write code for you, if you ask for it, but it can’t go and create a website or an app from that code, where the website is live with a domain name, or the app published on the app store. An AI agent will be able to do these things, they will have the ability to not just show what needs to be done but also go ahead and do some of that work.

The Framework of AI Agent Functionality

At their core, AI agents operate through a structured cycle: sense, think, and act. This framework is the foundation of how they interact with their environment and accomplish tasks.

  • Sense: AI agents gather data from their surroundings or users using sensors, APIs, or databases. This step is crucial for providing context and ensuring the agent understands the environment it operates in.

  • Think: Once data is collected, agents analyze it to determine the best course of action. They rely on algorithms, models, and rules to evaluate inputs and align them with their objectives.

  • Act: Based on their analysis, agents take action to achieve specific goals, whether it's generating a response, adjusting a system, or completing a physical task. Actions are often informed by feedback, enabling continuous improvement.

Applications for AI agents

According to Amazon’s official AWS blog, Amazon further explains how in a customer service scenario, an AI agent will automatically try to satisfy a calling customer’s query—by looking up internal communication by asking different questions to the human customer. In this scenario, the AI agent handles the customers’ calls on its own- without passing the call to human customer support experts. In fact, whether or not to transfer a call to a human customer support expert is determined automatically by the AI agent.

OpenAI’s reportedly working on getting their AI agent, codenamed ‘Operator’, out in the open for everyone to check out by this year. The AI agent is expected to be capable of autonomously operating certain tasks within your computer, like booking flight tickets and implementing code, among other things.

Google too, seems to be working on several AI agent projects, one of which is known as Project Jarvis. It’s the same project which was recently leaked on the Chrome web store. This AI agent will supposedly reside within Google Chrome browser with the ability to not only automate and execute tasks within the browser but also operate other apps on the host PC or computer.

Comparison of AI agents with traditional chatbots:

?

Feature ChatGPT/ Gemini AI Agent

Task Scope Generate text/code Execute actions (e.g., deploy code, book flights)

Autonomy Requires human prompts Operates independently

Adaptability Follows fixed rules Learns and adjusts to new inputs

In summary, AI agents will be superior to simple AI chatbots thanks to their advanced reasoning capabilities. Unlike traditional AI chatbots, like ChatGPT or Gemini, which give highly scripted responses to user queries, AI agents will have the ability to plan, think through and adapt to new information, enabling them to handle much more complex tasks with minimal human intervention. All the big players of AI industry are planning to release their versions of AI agents for the public soon in 2025, do keep an eye on it.
