Beyond the Business Card: How Networking Builds Your Community

The other day, I met for lunch with a former HR colleague. We had recently parted ways professionally, but she reached out to connect now that there was no "workplace obligation." As we settled in, her smile was radiant.
"I'm so inspired by your LinkedIn posts," she confessed. "The latest one actually helped me make some important career decisions."
We spent the next hour in a captivating exchange. We shared stories, doubts, and valuable advice. I even suggested a few connections who could help her navigate her next career move.
As the conversation wrapped up, she expressed genuine amazement at my network. "You've built such a positive and nurturing community around you, especially as a newcomer to this country, how ever did you manage it?" she asked.
This impactful exchange sparked the inspiration for this article. It reminded me that networking isn't at all about collecting business cards; it's about fostering genuine connections and building a supportive community.
Many of us see networking as a necessary but daunting task. It's about schmoozing with strangers in the hopes of scoring a lead or making the "right" connection. But what if we shifted our perspective on networking?
Picture networking not as a web of transactions, but as a supportive community – one that enriches both your professional and personal life. Some of my closest relationships started with professional networking. Even after moving on from jobs, these connections blossomed into genuine friendships.

Here's the key: view networking as an opportunity to build meaningful connections and give back to others. Here's how to embrace this approach:
Over the years, the network I've built has become more than just professional connections – it's transformed into a true support system. Through thick and thin, during lockdowns, career roadblocks, and other inevitable challenges, these connections have been a source of support and guidance.
So, the next time you see "networking" on your to-do list, remember: it's not about obligation. It's about investing in building a community that enriches and uplifts you, one meaningful connection at a time.
By framing networking as a way of building community and cultivating support, you turn a potential chore into a rewarding and fulfilling experience.
So, get out there and start schmoozing!
