Beyond the Bin: Small Actions, Big Impact on the Planet

Beyond the Bin: Small Actions, Big Impact on the Planet

A can of soft drink in hand with a background of a club is pretty Instagramable. Bokeh images of cans piled up from late night parties are also common. But, have you ever seen an awareness message regarding the significance of recycling aluminium cans?? Do you know, it can take up to 500 years for #aluminiumcans to decompose??

Aluminium does not degrade during the recycling process, that means it can be repeatedly recycled for infinite times. Recycling aluminium saves millions of tonnes of greenhouse gases, energy, electricity and fuel for its transportation. It is interesting to know that making aluminium cans from recycled materials requires less than 5% of the energy used to make new aluminium cans from Bauxite. Making cans out of aluminium for storing #softdrinks and juices is one of the commonly used phenomenons as it takes five tonnes of Bauxite to make just one tonne of aluminium cans.

In today's environmentally conscious world, recycling has become a crucial aspect of our daily lives. Among the various materials that can be recycled, aluminium cans hold a special place due to their immense significance. Recycling aluminium cans not only conserves valuable resources but also helps combat climate change, reduces energy consumption, and fosters a sustainable future. In this blog, we will explore the importance of recycling aluminium cans and the positive impact it can have on our #environment .

  • Conservation of Natural Resources: Aluminium is derived from bauxite, a non-renewable resource. By recycling aluminium cans, we reduce the need for mining and extracting new bauxite, thereby conserving natural resources. Recycling just one aluminium can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours, highlighting the value of this process. Conserving resources through recycling helps preserve ecosystems, reduces deforestation, and minimises the ecological footprint associated with mining activities.
  • Energy and Carbon Footprint Reduction: The production of aluminium from raw materials requires a significant amount of energy. However, recycling aluminium cans consumes only a fraction of the energy needed for primary production. Recycling just one aluminium can saves enough energy to run a 60-watt light bulb for four hours. By recycling more cans, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
  • Landfill Space and Waste Reduction: Aluminium cans are one of the most commonly used beverage containers worldwide. Unfortunately, when not recycled, they often end up in landfills, where they contribute to the growing waste problem. By #recycling aluminium cans, we reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and alleviate the strain on our limited landfill space. Furthermore, recycling aluminium avoids the release of harmful chemicals that can contaminate the environment.
  • Economic Benefits: Recycling aluminium cans not only helps the environment but also provides economic advantages. The aluminium recycling industry generates employment opportunities and contributes to the local economy. It creates jobs in collection, sorting, processing, and manufacturing, stimulating economic growth. Additionally, recycling aluminium reduces the reliance on imported raw materials, enhancing domestic resource utilisation.
  • Infinite Recyclability: One remarkable property of aluminium is its infinite recyclability. Unlike many other materials, aluminium does not degrade during the recycling process. Recycled aluminium can be used to create new cans repeatedly without any loss in quality or performance. This closed-loop recycling system ensures a sustainable supply chain, reduces waste generation, and supports a circular economy model.
