Beyond Big Business: The Rise and Resilience of Solopreneurs"

Solo-preneurship is gaining traction in India as a fresh trend. While not widely known, "Solopreneur" shares roots with the term "entrepreneur." More professionals are opting to independently kickstart businesses without the traditional office, staff, or team. Essentially, a Solopreneur initiates a business using personal investment and operates as an individual consultant or practitioner. How does this differ from the traditional entrepreneur?

Solopreneurs run a one-person show

Think of a young woman who loves making gift cards. She creates a cool Instagram page to show off her designs and take orders. She does everything by herself—making the cards, packing them, and sending them out. This woman is a solopreneur, like a one-person team rocking at creating, selling, using social media, and making sure orders are delivered.

Every solopreneur is an entrepreneur, but not every entrepreneur is a solopreneur. Many entrepreneurs kick off as solopreneurs, but the key difference lies in their goals. Entrepreneurs aim for major enterprises, while solopreneurs prefer building their venture independently. Traditionally, freelancers were the go-to for one-person operations, like designers or consultants. However, today's solo workers, including content creators and e-commerce providers, defy these conventional categories. This diverse group, ranging from various backgrounds, is reshaping the scene, with some even juggling a nine-to-five job.

Today, many are choosing to leave their jobs and start their own businesses. Not with dreams of becoming massive corporations, but to redefine their work-life balance or find purpose in creating something uniquely their own.

Entrepreneurship became an avenue for many to enhance their well-being, without the added complexity of managing others or establishing a large-scale operation. Solopreneurship provides them with that flexibility.

Solopreneurship has become a choice for many seeking to enhance their well-being, steering clear of the challenges of managing teams or orchestrating large-scale operations. It offers them the freedom to pursue that path.

Social media paves the way for a broader range of solopreneurs

Solopreneurs diverged from freelancers when they began establishing personal brands through social media influence. Initially, influencers were seen as a niche market, but now even nano- and micro-influencers or creators with smaller followings can earn substantial annual incomes, ranging from $60,000 to $100,000. Many provide freelancing-like services while also managing content operations and selling products through affiliations or their own lines. A decade ago, the concept of solopreneurship might have seemed improbable, but today, with increasing automation support, individuals are recognizing the feasibility of running a business independently.

Solopreneurs, spanning from dog trainers to therapists, are achieving six-figure incomes. A variety of passion-driven ventures, whether in content writing, gardening, or selling homemade cupcakes locally, are transforming aspirations into tangible success. With advancing technology simplifying the pursuit of passions, solopreneurs are poised to venture into even more business domains.

Solopreneurs recognize the significance of branding their services and have embraced early mornings to do so. Through meticulous planning, adaptability, and consistent service, they harness their outreach via websites, blogs, podcasts, recorded videos, and social media posts to deliver exceptional and memorable customer experiences.

This emerging group of solopreneurs demands more than just a new label

Solopreneurs don't fit the freelancer mold or the entrepreneur's growth pursuit. This fresh breed demands more than a name change; it calls for a distinct set of tools. Traditional project management software falls short for solo operators. Instead, they seek tools automating various business aspects, enabling them to stay competitive while flying solo.

As the diversity among solopreneurs grows, society's economic resilience strengthens. Solopreneurs offer alternatives like local butchers and handymen, preventing complete dominance by large corporations.

In a nutshell, the secret to solopreneur success is to be quick, easy, and everywhere. Solopreneurs in India are waking up to the significance of building their service brands. Through detailed planning, adaptability, and consistent service, they are using websites, blogs, podcasts, videos, and social media to extend their outreach and offer excellent and memorable customer experiences.

I'll tell you why I want to be a solopreneur. The job situation across the world is pathetic. To get hired, you have to go through endless hoops to make sure you are the "right fit". Each interview takes a minimum of 2 weeks to get hired. Every time you interview with a company, your attention is locked in with that company because it is either too stressful to be able to interview elsewhere or they themselves ask you not to interview anywhere else (albeit tacitly by simply asking where else you're interviewing). Even after you get the job, you get a measly 3% increment (if at all) at the end of the year which does not keep up with inflation. Even if your company grows and/or gets more funding, your salary remains the same even though it was built off your sweat to begin with. Assuming the job, pay and increment are great, you still have to dedicate 1/3rd of your life to it, minimum. You can't just watch Netflix when you have nothing to do at the moment. You are either given something to do or your Netflix-watching is taken note of to either deny you new opportunities or be the first in line to be laid off.

Richa Tiwari my guess is the solopreneur trend is happening because it's faster than working in a team. But many solopreneurs will fizzle without support. There's an old African proverb: "if you want to travel fast, travel alone. if you want to travel far, travel with others." What's your take? Do you think solopreneur businesses are sustainable?
