Beyond Banking – The Real Heart of BCs’ Work
BCs go beyond transactions, transforming lives by empowering underserved communities with banking access, loans, and financial literacy, creating a lasting impact across India.
“In India, 190 million adults don’t have a bank account. That’s nearly 15% of the world’s unbanked population. Yet in rural areas where financial access is limited, BCs are changing that by providing more than just transactions—they’re helping people take control of their financial future.”
The role of Banking Correspondents (BCs) is often understood in terms of simple transactions: opening bank accounts, enabling deposits, and facilitating withdrawals. But if you speak to people who interact with BCs in their villages, a different story emerges. It’s not just about numbers or services—it’s about creating real change for families who have long been excluded from the financial system.
The Transformative Impact of Government Schemes
Take, for example, the impact of government schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), which aims to bring banking services to the underserved. BCs have been central to opening over 490 million bank accounts under this initiative. These accounts allow people to access pensions, insurance, and direct government transfers—essentially offering them a safety net that didn’t exist before.
Consider a farmer in a remote village who, thanks to a BC, is able to get his first loan to buy better seeds and equipment, which doubles his harvest. Or a widow who never knew she was eligible for a government pension, but a BC helps her register and receive the benefits she desperately needs.
BCs aren’t just middlemen between banks and customers. They are often the only connection people have to formal banking, which is why they are trusted within their communities. They provide guidance, explain complex financial services in local languages, and help people navigate everything from account openings to micro-loans. For many, a single interaction with a BC isn’t just a transaction—it’s the start of something transformative.
This story of transformation isn’t about vague ideas or lofty concepts—it’s real and measurable. The numbers like the 490 million Jan Dhan accounts or the 35 crore people who now have access to insurance—show just how much of a difference BCs make. But beyond the statistics, it’s the personal stories that truly show the power of this work: from children getting an education thanks to small savings accounts to entire communities now feeling secure knowing they have access to financial services.
This month, we celebrate the incredible work of our BC Sunita from Bihar and BC Gagan deep from Maharashtra who go beyond everyday banking. These aren’t just stories of financial transactions—they’re stories of transformation. From farmers finding stability to women starting businesses, BCs are changing lives every day.
Featured Success Stories: The Real Change
Let’s dive into the inspiring stories of BCs who are turning transactions into life-changing opportunities:
Turning Dreams into Reality
In the small village of Gopalganj, Bihar, Rakesh, a struggling farmer, had always relied on traditional farming methods, barely making enough to support his family. With no access to formal banking, he was stuck in a cycle of debt with local moneylenders, who charged up to 60% interest annually. His fortunes began to change when Sunita, a local BC, introduced him to formal banking services through Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY).
Sunita helped Rakesh open his first savings account and secure a micro-loan of ?20,000 under the MUDRA scheme. With these funds, Rakesh invested in higher-quality seeds and irrigation tools. Over two growing seasons, his crop yields increased by 40%, boosting his income and enabling him to repay the loan in full. Today, he is planning to expand his farm by 15 acres, and his savings account now has a steady balance—something Rakesh never thought possible.
“When I first met Rakesh, he was hesitant. He didn’t believe someone like him could have a bank account, let alone a loan. But after sitting down and explaining things in simple terms, I saw a shift in him—he started believing this could change his life,” says Sunita, a Banking Correspondent (BC) from Bihar.
Rakesh’s story is not unique. Sunita, like thousands of BCs across India, has been instrumental in connecting rural citizens with banking services they thought were out of reach. Sunita has helped 200 farmers like Rakesh access formal banking and over ?5 lakhs in loans in the last year alone.

A Self-Help Group’s Journey in Maharashtra
In a remote village in Maharashtra, a group of 10 women formed a Self-Help Group (SHG) to start a small business producing handicrafts. However, their lack of access to formal banking limited their potential. This changed when Gagandeep, a local BC, helped them open a collective account, which allowed them to save, access loans, and manage their finances digitally.
The group applied for a loan of ?50,000 through the SHG-Bank Linkage Program and used the funds to purchase raw materials and market their products. Within a year, they increased their production capacity by 75% and expanded their sales to nearby towns. Today, the group’s collective income has grown by 50%, empowering these women to contribute significantly to their families financial stability.
“I’ve seen the power that women have when they come together, but they just needed a little help with the financial side of things,” shares Gagandeep, a BC in Maharashtra.
Gagan has been working closely with a women’s Self-Help Group (SHG) for two years, helping them access a loan that allowed them to expand their small handicrafts business. Since then, the group has grown its savings by 60%, paid back its ?50,000 loan in just 18 months, and increased its reach to neighboring towns. For Gagan, the biggest reward is watching these women gain confidence and independence.

Challenges BCs Face in Transforming Communities
While BCs are driving real change, their work isn’t without challenges. Operating in remote areas, they often face infrastructural and social barriers that make their jobs incredibly demanding. From poor internet connectivity in rural villages to convincing skeptical communities to trust formal banking systems, BCs overcome hurdles every day to ensure financial services reach the last mile.
Take the case of Ravi, a BC from Odisha, who often travels several kilometers on foot to visit villages where there is no reliable transportation. In these isolated communities, residents have traditionally relied on informal lenders, and the idea of banking with a trusted institution is unfamiliar. Yet, Ravi continues to educate people about the benefits of opening accounts and securing government benefits directly through their BC service.
Key Barriers Faced by BCs:
Despite these obstacles, BCs like Ravi remain undeterred, and their efforts are paying off. In Ravi’s region alone, he has helped open over 800 bank accounts in just one year and facilitated ?10 lakhs in government benefit transfers—proving that even in the face of adversity, transformation is possible.

The Future of BCs in Community Transformation
As we look ahead, the future holds even more opportunities for BCs to deepen their impact. With advancements in technology and an increasing focus on financial inclusion, BCs will have more tools at their disposal to make a difference.
For example, the expansion of digital payment systems and government initiatives like Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) will allow BCs to facilitate transactions more efficiently. This means that more families can access financial resources that previously seemed out of reach.
