In the article, I looked back on how email, over time, did not merely automate the fax machine but spurred far-reaching changes in the way we work: it changed jobs, culture, flattened organizational structures, and changed professional relationships.
In the article, I also explored the effects of one specific new functionality: Microsoft Copilot’s ability to transcribe and summarize meetings and follow up on action points. I examined possible ways this functionality could affect our behavior and contribute to a new philosophy around hybrid workplaces. Over the past week, I have delved deeper to understand how companies are anticipating the potential impacts of AI on the general EVP.
Some believe there is no rush and expect a gradual adjustment at best. But I also encountered a large traditional law firm intentionally navigating the impact of shifting from a traditional partner structure with legal skills as core skills, towards a hybrid legal-tech company, and how the effect that will have on all layers of the organisation. With a proven record of predicting future developments, I will tell you this:
AI is definitely sending a shockwave through your organization
The question is not IF AI will disrupt the way we work, including our professional relationships and organizational structures, but WHEN it will happen.
And here lies the risk. Not taking timely action to understand the areas of impact and prepare for them can leave your company with a workforce possessing outdated skills and a lack of access to the AI talents needed to optimize your processes to stay ahead of your competition. Additionally, you may face a shortage of external resources to support you through these transformations - your competition might hire them first.
The First Signs of AI impacting EVP
Last week, I sent a proposal to a company looking into automation and AI integration. The leadership team wants to understand what it means for jobs and responsibilities, possible ways to restructure and what it means for their strategic workforce planning.
We know that routine tasks will be replaced, affecting many jobs. We face choices: up-skill these employees and leverage these talents for more strategic and creative work, or maybe reinvent our current job structures, including middle management. Tasks and roles being restructured is the first visible effect and companies will face the challenge to choose their best strategy: investing in employee development with up-skilling and creating jobs with more responsibilities or streamline the organisation and save costs with FTE reductions.
