Beyond Asphalt: A Closer Look at Lahore's "Blue Roads"

Recently articles are published by news channels, in context to the Lahore becoming the first Asian city to introduce environment-friendly roads called "Blue Roads". It is commendable that the Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA) is working on this proposal to modernise Lahore's infrastructure and improve the quality of life for its residents. The Blue Road concept has already been implemented successfully in several European and Middle Eastern countries like Netherlands, France and Qatar. These roads are meant to be designed to offer a sustainable alternative to traditional asphalt roads by incorporating heat observation and energy-conserving features to reduce pollution and promote a healthier environment.

This innovative roads' idea is utilising a specialised coating that reflects sunlight, reducing the amount of heat absorbed by the road surface. In addition, the reflective coating improves visibility for drivers at night, improving road safety. However, there are concerns about wear and tear and potential glare1. The durability of heat-reflective coatings applied to asphalt pavement has not been extensively researched2. Cool pavements can increase the solar reflectance of roads, reducing the electricity required for street lighting at night and slowing atmospheric chemical reactions that create smog3.?Moreover, it is important to note that while Blue Roads may offer environmental benefits such as heat observation, energy conservation and reduced pollution, they may not be suitable for all types of roads or climates. For example, in colder climates where snow and ice are common, the reflective coating may not be effective in reducing ice formation on the road surface.?

Overall, it is a positive step towards creating a modern, sustainable and inclusive society in Punjab. Alternatively, there are several other sustainable ideas to traditional asphalt roads that incorporate heat observation and energy-conserving features to reduce pollution and promote a green economy. Decision makers should penetrate further and consider discussions by G2 "Blue Road Alternatives for Small Businesses" in 2022 and by Skylines General Discussions "Network extensions 2 alternative".
