Beware of Fake Offers: Safeguarding Job Seekers from Scams

In the modern job market, the attraction towards lucrative Job opportunities in BPO Industry can sometimes channelized via some fraudulent groups & fake job offers. Let’s read through a small Case Study and explore into the details of BPO fake offers followed by some control measures to protect Job seekers from falling victim to such scams.
Case Study (Name / Location changed to protect privacy)- Praveen, a college dropout of 2021, worked in some domestic BPOs for few months. financially needy, relocated from Adilabad to Hyderabad to kick-start her career in the ITeS / BPO industry. He started applying with leading BPOs in Hyderabad however, couldn't make it due to his average communication skills and poor technical knowledge. He started reaching out to 3rd party Agencies, Job groups on social media to find some guaranteed Jobs. After a few days, he came across an exciting Job posting of Customer Service in a reputed BPO.
Offering - The job posting promises an attractive salary, flexible working hours, comprehensive training, and various opportunities. Excited by the prospects, Praveen submits his Resume. He was assessed casually by the Recruiter over the Phone and assured the Job Offer. Praveen has been dealing with the Recruiter only over Phone. He never visited the consultant / Recruiter in person.
Money- The Recruiter / Consultant requested Praveen to pay a significant fee (One lakh) upfront for the Offer, Training materials and certification courses, claiming it's a standard practice in the industry.
Fake Email communication - Praveen receives emails from generic email addresses rather than official company domains. The language used in the emails was also not professional and full of grammatical errors / different font sizes.
Joining -Praveen overlooked all gaps in email / casual interview rounds and was attracted by the offer and his joining in the MNC. He borrowed some money from family / friends and paid via UPI / Paytm. Praveen was always dealing with Recruiter / Consultant over calls.
Onboarding Day -Praveen was easily identified as impersonated applicant when he reported for his joining, his joining, photo credentials never matched. His Interview data was not available in the company records hence he was blacklisted in the company records and sent back with a strong warning.
End of the Day - Praveen tried reaching out to the Recruiter / Agency on the same number but it was going unanswered for few days, no response to the messages and later got switched off. He has reported this to the local authorities about the issue but eventually lost all his money to the scammers.

Measures to avoid Fake Job Offers
Research Thoroughly: Before applying for any job, conduct thorough research on the company, its reputation, and its recruitment process.
Beware of Red Flags: Be vigilant for warning signs such as requests for upfront payments, unprofessional communication, or discrepancies in job postings.
Verify Contact Information: Use official contact channels provided on the company's website to communicate with recruiters or hiring managers. Email notifications should come from company's official domain email ID.
Protect Personal Information: Never provide sensitive personal or financial information unless you have verified the legitimacy of the employer.
Reporting Fraudulent Activities
If you encounter a suspected BPO fake offer or fall victim to a job scam, report it to the relevant authorities. By reporting fraudulent activities, you can help protect yourself and others from falling prey to similar scams in the future.
Frauds of fake job offers are growing rapidly in the market and it is important that one should be vigilant and aware about the genuine interview and offer process.
