We all hold back love from ourselves because of fear.
There’s a collective pressure to achieve more, to change our bodies, to do more, to be more successful...we rarely experience the pure joy and satisfaction of being here now because, frankly, we don’t think we deserve to be happy until we achieve all of our goals.
This has us believing happiness is the result of changing ourselves or doing more.
Our minds wander off into thoughts like “I’ll be happy when I fit into that pair of jeans”
“Why did I eat that late night snack?”
We live with regret and anxiety by obsessing over the past and the things that cannot be changed, and focusing so intently on the future and multiple scenarios that haven’t come to pass yet.
We want all these things so we will feel happier and more joyful - but think that those things only come at the cost of giving up being happy now so we can get where we want to go.
Here’s the truth:
If its happiness that you desire, you have to get in the habit of choosing joy in your life RIGHT NOW.
If you don’t learn to feel joy now, you’ll find it hard to ever feel truly happy no matter what you
achieve. Your mind remains in the habit of thinking you need to do more before you’ll be happy.
If you want joy, teach your mind how to experience it now, no matter how close you are to your goals!
Here are some solutions to think about:
Find something to appreciate about every day, even the smallest moments. Really taste that cup of coffee, savor a good laugh, count your blessing.
Start the day by saying aloud what kind of day you want to have. Declare what foods you look forward to eating, how you look forward to feeling, what one or two things you’ll do to show appreciation for yourself and your community.
At the end of each day, get in the habit of reflecting, in a celebratory way, on all the little things. Be mindful of the words you use to describe your day because they truly do mean a lot.
Finally, this isn’t an exact system at all. Your journey is personal, your story matters. Everyone wants to determine the exact formula for joy, but there is no universal prescription for attaining happiness.
