Beware the AI Hype

Beware the AI Hype

I have just completed a long piece on why AI Hype is the real threat to consider when considering the danger of AI.

Here are the quick take-aways from it if you don’t want to read the whole piece (although I encourage you to go into the weeds on it and follow all the links):?

  • Generative AI has some basic uses around remixing but gets everything else pretty wrong
  • The quality of the AI is not a threat by itself. Our belief in AI quality accelerates existing human threats.
  • Generative AI systems do not hallucinate. They fail.
  • Use of generative AI output for anything other than entertainment is one of the biggest threats we are currently facing.
  • AI systems are not a threat to existing jobs because they can do the job.
  • People’s belief that AI can do the job is the threat to existing jobs.
  • By focusing on the "future" threat of AI, the industry is failing to address the "current" threat of humans.
  • AI vendors want you to believe their product is better than it actually is.
  • Let’s call their “fears” what they are: AI Hype
  • The biggest threat from AI is believing in its current power and using it for serious things

You can read the whole thing live on TNL.net now, where it is sitting under the title “Beware the AI Hype”.
