In Between Waves: Catching up with Waves of Change and Ocean Born Foundation's Kristiane Davidson

In times of both ‘great resignation’ and ‘great transformation’ facing organizations, we believe listening to and working with the new up and coming talent can provide fresh and insightful answers while helping reframe problems and solutions. Meet Kristiane, our dear Waves of Change volunteer, who also recently joined our allies at Ocean Born Foundation in Madrid.

1) Hi Kris, it has been a year or more already spent together with Waves of Change, where you decided to dedicate some of your time and talent to our cause on top of your day job. Why did you decide to do so?

I chose to volunteer with Waves of Change because I strongly believe in the power of the blue economy to drive sustainable development and environmental conservation. The mission of Waves of Change resonated with my passion for impact investing and supporting innovative startups that are addressing marine and coastal challenges. I saw this as an opportunity to contribute my skills and to learn more about the latest innovations in this space.

2) What did this experience bring you on top of your work? What have been the highlights for you so far and why was this time well spent according to you vs. afterwork fun/leisure or rest?

Volunteering with Waves of Change has been incredibly rewarding, both personally and professionally. The highlights for me have included being involved in the Waves of Change annual Forum, including the Tideline Startup Challenge, as well as getting to know the other passionate Waves of Change volunteers. Of course, meeting the Ocean Born Foundation team at the 2023 Waves of Change forum was a major highlight for me, as I am now their new Head of Impact and Sustainability, supporting their vision of a healthy blue planet for the long-term benefit of all life on earth.

3) What challenge/s have you experienced that helped you to grow professionally?

One significant professional challenge I've encountered relates to bridging the language and knowledge divide between ocean health and investment within the context of impact and sustainability. Overcoming this challenge required me to develop my ability to translate complex scientific concepts and data into compelling narratives that resonate with investors and drive action towards sustainable investments in the blue economy. It taught me the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and the power of effective communication in catalyzing positive change at the intersection of finance and sustainability.

4) Overall how does your before/after this experience compare? If this makes sense or impact: how will you combine/bridge your Waves of Change volunteering commitment with your new job with our close partner and Coalition Member Ocean Born Foundation?

My involvement with Waves of Change has deepened my understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the blue economy in Europe. It has broadened my network and exposed me to diverse perspectives and innovative solutions. In my new role with the Ocean Born Foundation, I see tremendous potential to strengthen our partnership with Waves of Change, and advance our shared goals. This may involve leveraging my involvement in initiatives such as supporting the Waves Talent Program, and exploring opportunities for joint projects and initiatives that align with our shared objectives.

5) Any piece of advice or key factor of success you would like to share with our prospective volunteers / talent program participants from your experience so far?

One key piece of advice I would offer to prospective volunteers and talent program participants is to approach their involvement with curiosity, humility, and a willingness to learn and adapt. Embrace opportunities to collaborate, build relationships, and explore new avenues for impact. Remember that even small contributions can lead to meaningful change when driven by passion and commitment.

Muchas gracias Kris and all the very best until we see you again next June in Biarritz!
