Leadership Insight - April 2023

In our Adaptive Leadership presentations we talk about the status quo being an “invisible killer”. This concept ties to change and being comfortable. It is hard to “learn” how to be comfortable with change but a number of you have built that skill.?But can you be comfortable constantly looking for change, instigating change and never truly be “set”.?Better said, can you be comfortable constantly being uncomfortable??We all know change can kill and in a number of cases kill quickly if left unengaged, what is needed are professionals who are continuously looking for change, question how things are done, and influence the steps/learning needed to met the change “head on”.

Some things to consider as you look to build the skill of be being comfortable being constantly uncomfortable:

  • Always know “who you are” and make SURE it isn’t “what you do”.?A strong “who you are” gives you a constant go back to as what you do is constantly changing
  • See what you do through the lens of product management; knowing everything has a lifecycle and at each stage the “product” aka what you do will need to change. Work to push away from a project mindset aka a mindset of getting it done and moving on.
  • What are the tools you use to learn and test? What do you use to gauge who the customer is that will be most impacted? How do you assess the essential vs. expendable within the product that needs to change?

Leadership is no longer a noun, it is a verb we all most do. Getting better acquainted with Adaptive Leadership and or Agile Leadership with help you along the path of always questions the status quo.
