Better Work. Better Life. — An Introduction

Better Work. Better Life. — An Introduction

Hi everyone!

For those I haven't connected with yet here on LinkedIn - I want to quickly introduce myself. I'm Jennifer Moss, a speaker, journalist, author, and strategist. I've spent years researching and understanding the intricate dynamics of workplace culture and the profound impact it has on our mental health and overall performance. I've been a Harvard Business Review contributor since 2014 and have written three books including: Unlocking Happiness at Work, The Burnout Epidemic and the upcoming Why Are We Here?, also published by Harvard Business Review Press.

Why I Care

Why do I care? Because I can relate. I went from receiving the International Female Entrepreneur of the Year Award to crashing and burning (out). It took a cataclysmic shift in my life to realize how dysfunctional our relationship with work can be. I started talking to others and encountered countless stories of individuals grappling with chronic stress and organizations struggling to create environments where employees can truly thrive.

But managing burnout isn't the only issue; it's part of a bigger picture that includes developing our emotional intelligence and psychological fitness. It's about mindset and setting boundaries. It's also what is outside of our control - institutional and societal stress. We also need to ensure work is fuel - not famine for our soul.

Well-being and high performance are not mutually exclusive but deeply interconnected. And, I honestly love seeing people happy at work. It's such a big part of our lives so why spend it unhappy?

What to Expect

In the upcoming issues of the newsletter, we'll explore:

  • Strategies to Beat Burnout: Practical tips and evidence-based approaches to manage stress and avoid burnout. Note: self-care is NOT the cure for burnout - we'll discuss.
  • Improving Well-Being: Insights into fostering a healthier work-life balance and enhancing your mental health. New generations of employees believe well-being is a right not a perk - how can we ensure we're rethinking.
  • High-Performing Work Cultures: How to build and sustain a work environment where everyone can excel. Identifying what motivates us and each other and what holds us back.
  • Mental Health Awareness: Understanding and addressing mental health challenges in the workplace. New generations are reinforcing that well-being is a right not a perk - a concept we can all get behind. So what does that look like at work and in life?
  • Workplace Happiness: Creating a culture that supports and nurtures all employees. Spoiler: it’s not about the free donuts. It's so much deeper and it pays off - we'll discuss.
  • Purpose and Belonging: How to foster a sense of purpose and belonging in your team. Because everyone wants to feel like they’re part of something bigger.
  • Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: Developing these skills to create more supportive and effective leadership. Work has changed. We're in a time of existential crisis and we're all asking "Why are we here?" Let's look for the answer together through research and community discussions.
  • Psychological Fitness: Techniques to boost your psychological resilience and fitness for a healthier mind. Taking time for rest is not antithetical to a strong work ethic.

Each issue will tackle these topics in a focused, succinct manner, providing you with actionable advice and thought-provoking insights. I promise to be brief (we'll also talk about time poverty so trust me - I get it - keep it quick). Whether you're personally seeking better ways to manage work stress and to be happier in life or you're a leader looking to inspire your team, this newsletter is for you.
