A Better Way

A Better Way

Albert Einstein said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” The first time I heard this quote, I laughed out loud. I thought to myself, well that’s stating the obvious! …or is it?

I can look back on many training sessions where I spun my wheels, often blaming my dog for repeated failures, when in reality, I was practicing failing methods. And as Bobby Robson notes, “Practice makes permanent,” not perfect.

Trustee has helped me break out of some of these well-worn ruts in my life and has challenged me to break new ground in my training mindset. Trustee is consistent. If he understands what I want, I can count on him to do it. Every time. With his help, my motto has become, “If it’s not working, I need to find a better way.” This approach has transformed my frustration into exploration. And this is what I’ve discovered: there is always a better way. ALWAYS! If I am willing to seek it.

Some of my best discoveries have been built on top of my biggest road blocks. Each situation is different and each dog I train is unique. This poses me with a constant need to probe new ideas and adapt my approach to fit the disposition and learning style of the dog I am training. I know I’ve landed on a winning way when I see responsiveness rise and walls of resistance fall.

I never tire of seeking better ways, because I believe there is always a better way to be found. So next time you hit the wall in an area of life or dog training, don’t get discouraged. Get determined to find a better way. There is one out there just waiting to be found.
