Better Together
Bill Shander
Keynote speaker, workshop leader, LinkedIn Learning Instructor focused on information design, data storytelling & visualization, and creativity
Humans are social animals. And we have literally evolved to rely on each other, to bring different skills to the table that help us survive. We know our physical and mental well-being improves when we are surrounded by other humans. If we weren't sure of this before, COVID should have been a good reminder.
COVID also taught us that we can work from home, we don't need to always be physically next to each other, etc. (Of course, I think the jury may still be out on the long-term effects of this...)
But in the end, there's just too much evidence for us not to understand that we are better off as "we" than as just "me". Collaboration is good for us and, perhaps most importantly for this discussion, we produce better work when we collaborate.
Lesson: Collaboration in Data Viz
In this lesson, I share some helpful examples from different domains. And I point out that you're always collaborating, even when you don't think you are! It's our natural state to collaborate, either directly or indirectly.
Listen: Collaboration in Data Viz with Jan Willem Tulp
Jan Willem Tulp is a well-known award-winning data visualization designer who mostly works alone. But he has also done extensive collaborative work. Listen to his perspective on this topic, from both sides of the issue. And his lens is even broader, given that he's a software developer and an artist and has strong data skills...he is able to work alone because he has these diverse skills.
