Be a better problem definer

Be a better problem definer

This week is all about becoming a better problem definer.?

It's because we rush to solutions and struggle to say with the problem.?

We’re often too close to our challenges to be objective. What you think is the root cause might actually be a symptom. That's why it is important to stay with the problem and get to the heart of the issue. If you don't solve that, it’ll keep coming back.

But why do we often rush to the solution?

It’s because of?

  • A desire for closure or to feel productive: Sometimes, we just want to get a problem off our plate and move on. Focusing on the problem can be frustrating or uncomfortable, so we might be tempted to try to find a solution as quickly as possible.
  • A desire to avoid conflict or the unknown: If the problem is tied to a sensitive issue or there is potential for conflict, people may try to find a solution as quickly as possible to avoid confrontation or uncertainty.
  • A desire to be seen as competent: People may feel pressure to demonstrate their competency and come up with a solution quickly to impress their leaders or colleagues.

However, by staying with the problem and taking the time to fully understand it, we can often come up with better, more creative solutions that address the root cause of the issue.

Here are a few tips for you:?

  • Take the time to understand the problem fully: Don't rush to come up with a solution before you have a clear understanding of the problem.?
  • Ask clarifying questions: Don't take things at face value. Ask about the context, the goals, the people involved etc.?
  • Avoid making assumptions: Avoid making assumptions about the problem or jumping to conclusions. Be open to new ideas and approaches.
  • Consider different perspectives: Look at the problem from different angles and consider the views of various stakeholders.
  • Clearly articulate the problem: Make sure that you can clearly and concisely describe the problem in a way that others can understand.

Use the above tips to a better problem definer and more effectively identify the root cause of problems. It will ultimately lead to more effective solutions and save you time, energy and money in the long run.?
