Better option for school protection.

Pretty soon school teachers will be armed, assuming a new role of security guards in addition to the already difficult job of teaching. The teacher will no longer be that traditional, absolute non-threatening, mentoring figure. But, heck, things have changed in our schools and we must do what we must do to protect our kids.

But, instead, why could we not arm some of our veterans and former police officers with concealed weapons and ask them, on a voluntary basis, to patrol the school grounds and be there in the event of violence? These people would have a superior knowledge of weapons, most are no strangers to violence, and more importantly, really would know what to do in a violent situation.

Just a thought, given the large number of veterans and former police in our community, many highly trained, with combat experience, most likely willing and able to help out. I would rather have a former Navy Seal, an ex-Special Forces, a retired Federal Agent, an Iraq/Afghanistan combat veteran, a retired Police Officer shielding my child instead of a less-trained, less-experienced educator with the best of intentions.
