For Better Days in Uncertain Times

For Better Days in Uncertain Times

The last several months have exacerbated the level of uncertainty and stress that most of us experienced prior to the pandemic. The changes in our lifestyles and the fears related to Covid were a lot to accommodate to. Just as we were getting used to the new routines of being home, you may have been told to return to work or found out the return is delayed. On top of the pandemic, there has been an awakening to the inequities in our society and associated violence and possible feelings of guilt. It feels like we’re living in uncertain times. I hear many people wondering about “What is my role in preventing the spread of illness and becoming part of a solution for greater equity?”

What are you doing to get through these uncertain times?

Research has shown that greater positivity builds resilience, and both comes from and contributes to greater optimism. Most people know that exercise, self-care and/or spiritual activities are associated with positive emotions. What else is needed in these uncertain times? A recent study, led by Barbara Fredrickson, PhD at the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Laboratory at UNC Chapel Hill, collected data from over 600 adults. This study found that the people who participated in the following list experienced more positive states than those who didn’tHere’s what people did

M- Minimize passive scrolling through social media

A – Accept negative emotion, acknowledge the emotion/feeling and not wallow in it, emotional agility

R – Really connect with people through video or phone. Connecting via text, IM and email did not generate positive sense of connection

C – Care for yourself, adequate sleep and nutrition and having some down time to refresh

H – Help others, kind acts – perhaps pick up an item at the store for someone more at risk, make that additional call to someone alone, donate masks

To build positivity and resilience it is valuable to set time aside to participate in these MARCH activities as well as regular exercise and spiritual activities (in the broadest sense those connected to your sense of purpose).

What will you do or are you doing to keep yourself positive?
