Tech department unveils £32m funding pot for AI projects
The UK’s tech department has unveiled a £32m funding pot to be split between 98 projects developing AI in the NHS, construction, the railways and more.
The projects will be carried out by more than 200 businesses and research organisations.
Projects include a £165,006 plan for V-Lab Ltd to develop AI software to improve skills training and risk assessments in the construction sector.
UK fintech investment nearly triples despite global decline
Investment in the UK’s fintech sector has nearly tripled in the first half of 2024, despite a global decline.
Several major deals, including a $4bn buyout of financial software company IRIS Software Group and a $999m VC round by the small business-focused marketplace platform Abound, helped the UK retain its title as the centre of European fintech funding.
Electrification community set for £800,000 ‘single source of truth’ boost
What is seen as a "vitally important" £800,000 initiative - designed to provide a ‘single source of truth’ for electrification skills and capabilities - is nearing its first big milestone.
The Electrification Skills Network (ESN), which is funded by UK Research & Innovation and delivered by Coventry University is weeks away from launching the UK’s first-ever Framework for a sector that has the potential to create more than 100,000 jobs by 2025.
West Midlands SMEs to benefit from government's warship and submarine agreement
Small British businesses are to benefit from a new government warship and submarine agreement.
The agreement will see far greater access from the Ministry of Defence directly to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), allowing them to bid for work under a seven-year framework worth up to £850 million.
The Marine Systems Transformation (MaST) programme delivers support and spares to non-combat equipment aboard UK warships and submarines, covering 180,000 different items from propulsion systems to galley equipment.?

BetaDen Incubate Intake 1.0 Programme Concludes
All good things must come to an end as our fantastic BetaDen Incubate Intake 1.0 have finished the eight-week programme.
A massive congratulations to the entire Intake, all of whom have been absolutely brilliant - we greatly look forward to watching their progress and continuing to support them in any way we can.

Garland Surgical (Cohort 8.0) Secures WMHTIA Grant to Advance MaltaHip Development
We’re thrilled to share that our Cohort 8.0 founder Garland Surgical has been awarded a grant from the West Midlands Health Tech Innovation Accelerator (WMHTIA).
This significant funding represents a major milestone in their journey toward the commercialisation of MaltaHip, the innovative ultra-low wear hip replacement designed specifically for younger, active patients.
With the support of the WMHTIA, which is funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology in partnership with Innovate UK and the West Midlands Combined Authority, Garland will be able to accelerate their product rapidly. This grant will enable them to advance the development of MaltaHip, bringing them closer to offering a one-surgery solution that can improve the quality of life for countless individuals.
