Beta Read and Reviews

Beta Read and Reviews

Authors need to develop a thick skin if they truly want to improve their work. One of the ways that is available to authors is a BETA read. This allows one to one feedback in a powerfully effective way. The key for the author in getting the best possible response that meets their expectations is to provide the work and then to provide their expectations. If you're looking for character development, or establishing past or present tense; that's what you need to request from your reader. The BETA reader will provide only that information. However, you will limit yourself to there errors that you may not be aware of such as passive voice or repeated word use. Allow the BETA reader the freedom to give you honest feedback. Select someone you trust. In other words do not take what she/he said as personal.

There are a few simple rules to a great BETA read:

1. Be honest about the work.

2. Be Specific about what you see is wrong. Provide examples of what is wrong and how to fix the issue. Avoid generalities.

3. Have more praise than critique.

4. Avoid using absolute statements: "You always..."

5. Deliver the feedback in a timely manner. If you agreed to offer your opinion then do not let the author down. They're counting on you.

6. A BETA read does not include grammar unless it's so obvious the author needs to know. Otherwise leave it for a professional editor to determine the needs.

7. Respect the Author’s wishes regarding their expectations.

8. Do not overwrite or impart your style of writing as theirs. Respect their work.

9. Ask the goal and vision of the work, and respect where they want to go.

10. Respect the author's right to disregard your "opinion."

BETA reading is part of the creation process and should be requested by an author through the entire creation process. It is a vital final tool before submission to an editor. You will pay an enormous amount for a content edit vs a proof edit. The goal is to make your work as strong as it can possibly be, so that your process to publication is simpler and with ease.

Excellent tips on a beta read. I think you especially nailed it with #7. I find that might be the gray area for a lot of beta readers!
