The Best Way to Remember Names

The Best Way to Remember Names

If you can remember names you will build relationships and friendships. If you are in business this will build your business and network.

Have you ever met someone and 2 seconds later you can't remember their name?

That's not a memory problem. That's a focus problem.

Here are the 5 steps to remember anyone's name:

  1. Focus - As you are about to meet someone you are often asking yourself, 'What do I think of them? What business deals are we going to do?' This clutters your mind and you will not be focused. Instead, develop the habit of asking yourself, 'What is their name?' as you approach. This will focus your brain to be ready to hear and remember their name.
  2. File - When you want to store a piece of paper to find it later what do you do? You file it either in a file cabinet or in a spot that you put that kind of information so you can easily retrieve it later. If you want to remember a name you need to store the name in a location. This would be a location on their face. Do they have a big nose? Pretty eyes? Bald head? Lots of hair? Beard? Dimples? Small ears? Big ears? Think eyebrows? Thin eyebrows? Select on of these locations in your mind and it becomes the file.
  3. Picture - Turn their name in to an image. Steve = stove, Lisa = Mona Lisa, Karen = carrot, Brian = brain (these are just examples, you create your own)
  4. Action - With action and emotion see the image on the file. For example, If the name is Lisa and you have determined her outstanding feature is here eyes imagine you are painting the Mona Lisa in her eyes. If the name is Steve and he has a beard imagine you are cooking the beard in a stove.
  5. Review - People will ask, 'Does this work for long term or short term memory?' The answer is both. If you don't review it, you will only remember it short term. However, if you review it tonight, tomorrow and the next day you are putting it in your long term memory.

Remembering names and faces will build relationship and your business. In 2012, I memorized the names of the 2,400 fallen United States military from the war in Afghanistan and I wrote these names out on a wall February 28, 2013. It took over 11 hours to complete.

But the process was simple: Focus, File, Picture, Action and Review. I had to tweak these steps a bit since I was not seeing the people face to face but instead names in a book. However, the concept is exactly the same.

Practice this and you will begin amaze yourself.
