Already in 442 b.C. Sophocles said: 'No one loves a man who brings bad news'.
But as we all know, giving bad news is inevitable in business.?
After all, business is never a rosy affair.
Whether?you love to celebrate new sales highs and milestones with your team, there is a counterbalance to those moments, an internal change or restructure.?
If we focus on communication, delivering good news is easy, but when it comes to bad news, things get more complicated!
Today i introduce a methodology that is excellent for breaking bad news, known as?SPIKES.

SETTINGS
The first thing to check before giving bad news is the 'environment': we have to make the other party feel comfortable, the space in which we are communicating provides him/her with a high level of privacy, it has to be a moment entirely dedicated to him/her.
PERCEPTION/PERSPECTIVE
Here one has to understand how much the other party realises the current situation. How to do this? Ask questions, open ended questions, how much do they know about the issue you are about to present them? Try to build a path of questions that will help him realises (or at least reflect) why you are communicating.
?Basically, before you tell, ask
INVITATION TO GO INTO DEPTH
If we have built a good path of questions in the previous step, here we will be faced with the facts!
This is the opportunity to draw conclusions about what has been said previously and to ensure that the relationship can remain healthy at the end of the communication.
KNOWLEDGE
This is the moment when you start to “tell”.
You have to be direct, without skirting around it, because it may already be a lot to take in. Lay it out and be willing to repeat what has been said if it helps the other side to put all the information together.

EMPATHY/EMOTION
It is important to observe and identify emotions so as to understand how to communicate with the other party.
This is because we are not all the same and we do not all react in the same way, so it is important to understand what the other person is feeling so you can offer him/her the most appropriate support.
Remember it is essential to create a connection!
SUMMARY/ STRATEGY
To summarise, be insightful, empathetic and supportive, using simple statements to reinforce the key messages and sentiments behind the decisions made.
Thinking about an action plan for moving forward can also be a source of comfort as it shows an extra level of consideration.

But how to give good news and bad news? All at once? Separately? Is there a right way to do it?
Yes, there is! ????????????????????????????????

2 年Giuseppe Conti A very valuable article, thank you. It reminded me of this 2021 case (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/dec/07/not-great-news-us-boss-fires-900-employees-on-a-zoom-call ) and how vital it is to have a well-thought and tactful methodology in such scenarios.
A really useful framework. Thanks Giuseppe !
