Best tips for job interviews?

Most recruitment processes still involve interviews. I am not sure if there is a lot of evidence to suggest that they are an effective way of selecting candidates and I have seen many poor hiring decisions based on a great interview performance. No doubt many fantastic candidates have missed out on opportunities by interviewing badly.
I have interviewed hundreds of candidates for many roles - many of them senior positions and I have always been amazed at how poorly some very experienced people can come across in an interview.
I get asked by students about my “top tips” for interviews and I find myself waffling answers about “being properly prepared” and “doing your homework” - but these are vague and not very helpful.
Although I have been involved in recruitment over many years, I am not an expert.
I would love to be able to provide better answers to the students I meet - not necessarily from a theoretical book, but based on real life experiences?
