Best thing about sustainability - It's not just one dimensional - Part I
Many people think of sustainability as an one dimensional concept - be green. However, it is much more than that. In order to be sustainable, it's not enough to just recycle and plant trees (although it would certainly help); you have to think of the bigger picture.
From an environmental perspective, yes, being green is awesome, and that's why so many companies out there are focusing on the mission of producing zero carbon footprint, or carbon-neutral, and relying more on more sustainable energy sources, such as solar and wind. On the downstream, many then engage in recycling, and even upcycling - the practice where one reuses material in a way that produces higher value products in the end - such as Dell's Ocean Plastics initiative. This, creates a good circular economy.
However, many of these are just that - balancing out the bad so we reduce the harm we're doing to the planet we live in. But what happens to the bad that we've already done?
This is where technology can shine.
More often then not, tech companies are not giving the customers the reason to upgrade their existing systems. Especially from a data center perspective, these systems can last for a long time, so why upgrade and spend more? Well this is where technology meets sustainability meets profitability.
Yes, newer technologies can make everything run faster, better, smoother. However, true and real transformation happens when hardware and services are designed from a customer and environmental perspective. In turn, not only can it make your workforce and IT environment more efficient, yet at the same time, help you cut down cost and be kinder to the environment. This is what Dell calls Legacy of Good (environmental pillar).
If we make your new hyper-converged infrastructure run more efficiently, not only can it cut down your overhead cost and increase ROI by offsetting the switching cost in the long term, it can also help the environment by consuming less power, relying less on cooling, and in turn reducing carbon footprint that's being produced. Together, with Dell's continuous commitment in investing in sustainable innovations, such as recyclable packaging and more, we can work towards a common goal of creating not only a carbon-neutral mindset, but carbon negative, where we do more good than harm.
Personally, I'm extremely excited about working for a company that have such a commitment to sustainability. What's more, is the fact that we not only emphasize on environmental sustainability, but also people and community as well, which I'll talk more in Part II. However, I'm sure you can already feel my passion and enthusiasm from my participation in the MMDP at Dell, as well as my journey to Cannes Lions Festival and competing in the Young Marketers Competition!
