BEST SUPER BOWL 56 COMMERCIALS

BEST SUPER BOWL 56 COMMERCIALS

Super Bowl LVI (that's 56 to you and me) saw the new school batch of ads from Crypto + Gambling + Tech + Travel stand out over the traditional Alcohol + Telecom + Movies. Here is my super fast and stripped down list of the Top 10 (in random order) commercials from the 2022 Super Bowl.

Amazon Alexa- Cute celebrity power couple Scarlett Johansson + Colin Jost come off as fun and relatable, driven by Alexa’s mind-reading powers. It had great flow, multiple jokes that hit, and featured Alexa so well she seemed like they all were a trio.

Irish Spring- The goofiest ad of the night that should appeal to both Monty Python fans and the Tik Tok world. Weird enough without being stupid. Out there humor is appreciated, especially for a product like soap. ?

Expedia- It’s almost as if the writers for this commercial stole the copy from people’s minds as Ewan McGregor says: “do you think anyone of us will look back on our lives and regret the things we didn’t buy? Or the places we didn’t go?” Best line of the night. People want special experiences. Good for you, Expedia.

Coinbase- Usually 1 or 2 Super Bowl commercials will roll the dice on some call-to-action with a completely unconventional idea to try to stand out. The floating QR code that would not leave the screen was damn bold. Whether it actually got people to hold their phones up to the screen we’ll never know but we do know the PR story about crashing the site (sure, dude) already worked.

Nissan- Unlike all of the electric car ads, Nissan actually featured their car prominently. It looked good. Better than that ridiculous Fabio hair on Eugene. Loveable dry humor goof dad Eugene Levy as the hero? Sure. He’s transported into an action movie lifestyle and we’re along for the ride.

Cue Health- Someone did a COVID ad. I think this was the only one. The product was new, well-explained, and had a cute spin to its existence in your house with other modern gadgets. It belongs.

Lay’s- A fun little journey as Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan are just so damn likeable. They were hamming it up for potato chips and enjoying the ride. I remember this ad clearly, which is sorta the point, right?

Planet Fitness- It had the trappings of a generic Super Bowl ad (forgotten celebs, cameos, jokes, etc.). But Lindsey Lohan came off as real, being the hero of this story to get back in the gym this winter with COVID lifting.

FTX- If you like Larry David, you liked this ad. I like Larry David. The silly historical bad judgments were told well, leading up to crypto. Still, I had to look up this was for FTX, I didn’t remember the name. Which, true, might be the biggest condemnation of an ad that can exist. Still, Larry David.

Caesar’s Sportsbooks- This was the Super Bowl of Gambling as the world seems to care more about prop bets, point spreads and the moneyline than genuine rooting interest for a team. Sports gambling ads are everywhere but JB Smoove and the whole Manning clan kept things light with just enough punch (“I said legendary”) to make us smile to place a bet.?

I thought it was a good year. Funny actor-written scripts and clever ensemble casts.

No one asked me either but the best commercial of the night was for ClickUp. It was created and produced by my daughter, Melissa.
