I was in a meeting today and we started talking about sales experiences. One of the guys asked me what my greatest sales story was. "There are so many..." I protested. Finally, they got me to tell it.
I was working for Hilti at the time, working in the Tulsa headquarters. I was working late making outbound calls and came across a number that had never been contacted. I called with little expectation of an answer- but, that's always when they pick up the phone.
It was a construction manager, and he was in a bind. He needed a huge nail and no one had been able to find it. Searching the catalog I found it, as well as the thirteen boxes needed to cover his order. These were really giant nails that never sold, and a single box was well over $600. So, I had to ask.
"What in the world are you building?'
He laughed. I'll never believe him, he kept saying. I explained there was nothing in the construction world that could surprise me, I'd heard it all.
"An ark. Specially Noah's Ark."
I laugh. Silence.
"Wait, you are really building Noah's Ark?" Come to find out, they were a construction crew for a movie - Evan Almighty. Most of the boat was VGI, but some of it actually had to be built.
So I sold the nails to build Noah's (Evan's) Ark. Pretty cool resume attachment.
